About New Forest
Pulling up to Longmead just before teatime felt like slipping into a hug. It's this cosy detached lodge tucked away in Beaulieu, right in the heart of the New Forest, with that classic thatched roof and honeysuckle rambling up the walls. The owner had left the key in the door with a cheery note about local walks and where to spot the ponies – proper welcoming touch. We tumbled out, bags everywhere, and the kids were straight off, dashing across the enclosed garden to peer over the fence at a couple of those free-roaming New Forest ponies ambling by. "Can we feed them, Mum?" No chance, I said, but watching their faces light up was pure gold. The garden's a riot of wildflowers and that lush grass you only get in these parts, with a patio perfect for a cuppa while the sun dips low. Inside, it was all we'd hoped for – that warm, lived-in feel of a proper country cottage without any pretensions. The open-plan living space welcomed us with a wood-burning stove (we got it going later for toasty marshmallow experiments), squishy sofas piled with cushions, and a kitchen that had everything from cafetière to that quirky bread-maker the kids immediately wanted to commandeer. Upstairs, the bedrooms are snug as a bug, with those velux windows framing the treetops. We claimed the master with its en-suite – views over the forest that make you forget the world – and the twins bagged the one with the bunk beds, giggling about midnight feasts already. First impressions? Blissfully chaotic in the best way. We unpacked amid a whirlwind of "Where's my charger?" and "Can we have ice cream now?" but soon settled into lodge life. That evening, we wandered a short loop from the door into Palace Lane Wood, dodging ponies and breathing in that earthy pine scent. The light filtering through the oaks was magical, and spotting a deer darting off had us all whispering like we'd discovered Narnia. Back for supper – I rustled up pasta with local sausages from Beaulieu's farm shop (a quick five-minute drive), and we ate outside as the bats started flitting about. Pure simple pleasure, that. Sitting there later, pint in hand, watching the kids conk out on the sofa after their pony obsession, I had one of those quiet moments. Work's been mad lately, always chasing the next deadline, and here I was, sap-scratched car parked up, surrounded by family and forest quiet. It's the little things, isn't it? No grand plans, just this unhurried vibe that makes you realise how knackered you've been. Longmead's got that knack – it draws you in, slows you right down. Can't wait to wake up to birdsong tomorrow and see what other lodge chaos unfolds. |
