I finally made it to Stelling Minnis after a bit of a faff on the M20. Picture this: I'm trundling along from Canterbury, sat-nav chirping away, when I realise I've packed the wrong wellies – the ones with a hole in the sole from last year's Glastonbury mudbath. Sod's law, right? A light drizzle starts just as I turn off onto the winding lanes towards the 3 Bed Lodge, turning the verges into a soggy mess. I pull up chuckling to myself, one foot already squelching, but honestly, who cares? This was meant to be about switching off, not stomping through puddles like some intrepid explorer.

The lodge itself? Blimey, what a gem. Tucked into a quiet spot in this tiny Kentish hamlet, it's the sort of place that whispers "relax" the moment you step through the gate. Wood cladding, a pitched roof, and that classic countryside vibe – proper homely without being fussy. I lug my bags up the steps (wellies abandoned in the car boot for now), unlock the door, and bam: instant cosiness. The open-plan living area hits you first – a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy evening fire, squishy sofas piled with cushions, and a kitchen that's kitted out just enough for brewing endless cups of tea without any faff. First impressions? Pure bliss. I dumped my stuff and headed straight out back. Nothing fancy, just enough to cobble together a ploughman's in the garden. Back at the lodge, sunset painted the sky all pink and gold, and we lit that stove anyway, curling up with blankets even though it wasn't cold. Staring into the flames, I had one of those quiet moments: life's too short for rushing about. Here, in this unassuming Kentish lodge, doing bugger all felt like the point.
