About Kent
By the time we trundled into Whitstable, the Oyster Festival bunting was fluttering in the breeze, and the sea air hit us like a salty embrace. Our little home for the next three days was the 2 Bed Lodge, tucked away in a quiet nook just a short stroll from the pebbled beach. Spotting it felt like stumbling on a secret – a cosy wooden lodge with a pitched roof, flower baskets dangling cheerily by the door, and that inviting porch swing creaking gently in the wind. We parked up on the gravel drive, tyres crunching like we were in some countryside idyll, and piled out, stretching our legs after the two-hour slog. First impressions? Pure magic. Unlocking the door with the key tucked under the mat (old-school trust, love it), we stepped into a world of snug simplicity. The open-plan living space was all low beams and soft lighting, with a squishy sofa begging for a collapse and a wood-burning stove that hadn’t been lit yet but promised evenings of toasty bliss. The kitchenette was compact – perfect for knocking up beans on toast or a cheeky fry-up – complete with a retro kettle that whistled like a contented kettlebell. I could already picture spilling tea on the checkered lino while the kids raided the biscuit tin. Up the narrow stairs, the two bedrooms were gems: one with a double bed piled high with quilts, the other with bunks that had my youngest bouncing like a human pogo stick before we’d even unpacked. “Mum, this is better than our house!” she squealed, which says it all. The bathroom was tiny but spotless, with a shower that roared like a proper power jet – no faffing about with dribbles here. Outside, the private patio overlooked a wildish garden, alive with bees buzzing round lavender and the distant crash of waves. We cracked open a bottle of local Rosé (grabbed from the village shop en route) and just sat there, feet up, watching the sun paint the sky pink over the marshes. That first evening set the tone for our relaxed family break – pure lodge life, with its gentle chaos. The kids dashed off to poke around the garden, unearthing a half-buried football that led to impromptu penalty shootouts against the fence (much to the neighbours’ amusement, I’m sure). I nipped down to the beach, mere minutes away, filling my pockets with smooth Whitstable pebbles while the husband fiddled with the BBQ, charring sausages to perfection. There was a moment, as I stood there barefoot on the shingle, waves lapping at my toes, when I caught myself reflecting gently: life’s mad rush back home feels a million miles away in a spot like this. Why do we complicate things? Here, with the lodge’s fairy lights twinkling as dusk fell, it was all about these simple pleasures – a shared laugh over slightly burnt bangers, the kids’ sandy footprints tracking mud inside, and that profound contentment of just being. Honestly, arriving at the 2 Bed Lodge felt like slipping into a favourite jumper – comforting, unpretentious, and utterly right for a Kentish escape. If you’re after that chilled family vibe without the hassle, this is your spot. We hadn’t even been there an hour, and I was already plotting our return. |
