About Kent
Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon, I was smitten straight away. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside the village, it's the sort of place that whispers "relax" before you've even turned off the engine. The wooden exterior gleams under the Kent sun, with a sprawling garden that rolls out like a green carpet, dotted with wildflowers and a couple of weathered benches perfect for pondering life's mysteries – or just watching clouds drift by. I unloaded my bits in about two minutes flat, kicked off my shoes, and flopped onto the plush sofa in the open-plan living area. The wood-burner was already set (though I didn't light it – too balmy), and the kitchenette screamed homely efficiency: a retro kettle for brewing proper builder's tea, and a fridge humming quietly, ready for lazy snacks. First impressions? Pure bliss. That garden was the star of the show. I spent the evening wandering its edges, breathing in the earthy scent of damp grass and blooming lavender – Stelling Minnis does that fresh, rural air like nowhere else. No grand plans, mind; I plonked myself on a lounger with a mug of tea and my latest P.G. Wodehouse novel, letting the pages turn themselves as birdsong provided the soundtrack. It's funny how, after years of London hustle, the simple act of doing bugger all feels revolutionary. I caught myself smiling at the absurdity: here I was, mid-30s, professional overthinker, giggling at Jeeves' antics while a butterfly flitted past. Who needs Netflix when you've got this? The next morning – our first full day – reinforced it all. Breakfast was a drawn-out affair of toast slathered in local marmalade (nabbed from the village shop on arrival), eaten al fresco as the sun warmed the patio. No itinerary, no alarms; just meandering into Stelling Minnis proper, a five-minute stroll away. The village green is quintessential Kent: thatched cottages, a cosy pub called the Walnut Tree where I nursed a half of bitter while chatting with a chap about the weather (as you do). Back at the lodge by lunchtime, I lit a candle-scented with apple blossom, courtesy of the hosts – proper thoughtful touch – and curled up for an afternoon read. The two bedrooms upstairs are snug as a bug, with views over the treetops, but I barely made it past the lounge. It's the joy of these spots: no pressure to explore far, just gentle potterings that leave you recharged. By evening, as the sun dipped low, painting the garden gold, I reflected on it all over a GandT. Life's too short for constant motion, isn't it? This lodge taught me that in the space of 24 hours – the art of savouring stillness amid Kent's rolling charm. If you're after a reset without the rigmarole, this is your haven. I left feeling lighter, already plotting a return to do even less. |
