About Isle Of Wight
Pulling up to the Premier, I was greeted by Maggie, the landlady, a wiry septuagenarian with a perm like a bird's nest and an accent thick as clotted cream. She thrust a key into my hand before I'd even shut the car door. "You're the London lad, then? Don't mind the cat—it's feral, but it catches mice better than I do." Maggie was a riot; she'd lived in Wroxall her whole life, born in the shadow of Appuldurcombe House, and within two minutes flat, she was regaling me with tales of the old smuggling days down at Ventnor. "Pirates, they were, not your fancy Jack Sparrows—proper Wight lads with donkeys hauling brandy up the cliffs." I laughed, lugging my bag inside, and she followed, pointing out the Aga like it was the crown jewels. "Cook on that, love, or starve. It's older than me, but it works a treat." First impressions? The cottage was pure charm—beamy ceilings, a quirky nook with a wood-burner that looked like it'd seen a few ghost stories, and views over rolling fields towards the sea. But it was Maggie who set the tone; her chatter made the place feel like home before I'd unpacked. No sooner had I settled in than I wandered down to the village shop for essentials—milk, teabags, the works. Enter Bert, the shopkeeper, a ruddy-faced chap in his sixties with hands like hams and a fag perpetually dangling from his lip. "New around here?" he barked, eyeing my city trainers. I nodded, confessing it was my first time at Wroxall Premier. He guffawed. "That old pile? Maggie's done it up nice, but mind the ghosts—Appuldurcombe's ruins are just up the lane, and they wander on foggy nights." Bert was full of it, spinning yarns about the island's wartime secrets, how his grandad hid U-boat spies in the very hedges I'd driven through. "Locals only, mind—you lot from the mainland wouldn't last a winter." I bantered back, joking I'd brought my wellies just in case, and he slipped me a free pasty, insisting, "Fuel for the Wight, son. Don't go getting lost down Godshill way; the donkeys'll have you for breakfast." Cheeky sod, but his warmth was infectious—proper British banter that had me grinning ear to ear. That first afternoon, as I sat on the Premier's patio with a cuppa, overlooking the sheep-dotted fields, who should amble by but Old Tom, the postman on his electric bike. Spotting me, he screeched to a halt, helmet askew. "Staying at Maggie's, eh? Good on ya—she's the heart of Wroxall. Mind, don't let her rope you into the WI bake-off; last outsider tried, ended up with scones like house bricks." Tom was a gem, with stories of delivering mail through the '79 hurricane—"Post don't stop for gales, lad!"—and he reckoned the cottage had the best sunset spot within five miles, right towards Luccombe's cliffs. We chatted for ages about island quirks, like how the cows at nearby Whiteley Bank wander onto the road at dusk, causing merry chaos for drivers. "Keeps life interesting," he winked, pedalling off with a wave. As the sun dipped, painting the cottage in gold, I reflected gently on it all—me, the flustered Londoner spilling tea and muddling through, suddenly surrounded by these larger-than-life locals who'd adopted me without a second thought. Wroxall Premier wasn't just a stay; it was a crash course in island soul, courtesy of Maggie, Bert, and Tom. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Can't wait to go back. |
