About Isle Of Wight
Pulling up to Plimoth N9 just after lunch felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. It’s this cosy fisherman’s cottage, tucked in Yarmouth’s harbour village, all whitewashed walls and a cheeky blue door that screams “kick off your shoes and stay a bit.” We’d booked it for a three-day breather, nothing fancy, just us four—me, the other half, and the two lads—chasing that relaxed family vibe. The owner, a lovely local chap, handed over the keys with a nod to the best pub down the road. “Mind the low beams,” he winked. Famous last words. Stepping inside was pure lodge life magic, the kind that unravels city knots without you noticing. The open-plan living space hit first: a squishy sofa piled with cushions, a wood burner begging for an evening crackle (even if it was July), and a telly for rainy-day backups. The kitchen was a dream for lazy cooks like me—everything to hand, from the cafetière for my morning fix to a proper Aga-style cooker that whispered promises of bacon butties. We dumped the bags and raided the welcome basket: fresh scones, local jam, and a bottle of Wight ale. “Result!” chorused the boys, already eyeing the clotted cream. First impressions? Blissfully chaotic in the best way. The kids bolted upstairs to claim beds in the snug twin room, while we bagged the master with its harbour glimpses. Low ceilings had my 6’2” hubby stooping like a giraffe in a phone box—cue much ducking and giggling as he bashed his head on the bedroom beam. “It’s character-building,” he groaned, rubbing his noggin. I couldn’t help but laugh; it’s those tiny mishaps that make a place stick. Wandering out to the patio was the clincher. Overlooking Yarmouth’s marina, it’s got this unbeatable view of yachts tinkling in the breeze and fishing boats chugging back with the day’s catch. We cracked open drinks, feet up on the wonky wooden table, and just breathed. The sea air carried that salty tang, mingled with chips from the nearby huts. Simple pleasures, innit? No itinerary, no screens—just watching gulls swoop and the tide roll in. That first afternoon, we ambled five minutes to the harbour, grabbing ice creams from the van by the quay. The boys skimmed stones into the water, arms flailing with glee, while we parents nursed coffees at a bench, eavesdropping on sailors’ yarns. Back at the cottage by dusk, we fired up the BBQ on the patio—sausages sizzling, buns toasting, the lot. As the sun dipped behind the Solent, painting everything pink, I had a quiet moment of self-reflection. Life’s mad rush back home? Forgotten. Here, in this unpretentious nook, it was just us, a bit of lodge chaos, and the island’s gentle rhythm reminding me to slow down. Plimoth N9 wasn’t just a stay; it felt like home already, and we’d only just arrived. Can’t wait for day two. |
