I’ll never forget the drive to Nanny’s Little House in Sandown on the Isle of Wight – a proper faff from the start. We arrived mid-afternoon on a drizzly Friday, the kind of soft Island rain that makes everything smell like wet earth and freedom. Unlocked the door with a big brass key that felt like it belonged in a storybook, and stepped into a world of low beams, squishy sofas, and a kitchen that’s tiny but kitted out with everything you need for a fry-up.

Dumping the bags, we fancied a wander before settling in, no plans, just the thrill of getting lost in this off-the-beaten-track corner. Sandown’s got its touristy bits – the pier and arcades are a five-minute stroll away – but we veered left instead, towards the quieter paths behind the cottage. That’s when the magic kicked in. We plonked down with a thermos of tea from the cottage’s welcome pack (cheers for the shortbread, hosts!), and watched the clouds part just enough for a sneaky bit of sun. Emboldened, we pushed on, weaving through back lanes that twist like the Island’s own little secrets. Found ourselves at Lake Beach by fluke, another understated wonder barely half a mile from the cottage. It’s got this wild, untamed edge – shingle shores fringed by cliffs, with rock pools teeming with blennies and anemones that had me proper geeking out, poking about like a kid. No ice cream vans or donkey rides here; just us, a thermos refill, and the gentle whoosh of the Solent. Light humour in the air when I slipped on a seaweed-slick rock, landing bum-first with a splash – “Graceful as a three-legged donkey,” I quipped, while we dried off laughing on a driftwood log. These accidental finds turned our first hours into treasure hunting, far from the coach-party crowds.

As the sun dipped low, painting the sea all peachy, we meandered back to Nanny’s, arms full of foraged blackberries from a wild hedge we’d “discovered” en route. Sipping wine by the wood-burner (which lit first time, miracle!), I had a quiet moment of reflection. In the rush of life back home, I’m always chasing the next big thing – posh hotels, Instagram reels. But here, in this unassuming cottage and its surrounding hidden nooks, getting lost proved the real win. Three days in, and we hadn’t even scratched the surface, but that first afternoon?
