About Isle Of Wight
I finally made it to the Isle of Wight after a bit of a faff with the ferry from Southampton. Picture this: I'd packed light, just a rucksack with a few books and some crisps for the journey, but as we queued up at the terminal, I realised I'd left my phone charger in the car park back home. Typical me—rushing off without a backward glance. No bother, though; the crossing was smooth enough, with the Solent sparkling under a proper summer sun, and by the time we docked at East Cowes, I was already in holiday mode, humming along to some old tunes in my head.

The drive to Deluxe Lodge near Newport took about half an hour, winding through those classic Wight lanes lined with hedgerows and the odd thatched cottage. I was knackered from the week before, so the thought of checking in and doing bugger all was pure bliss. Pulling up to the lodge, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those posh glamping spots—timber-built with a wraparound decking that screams "put your feet up." The sea view from the front? Stunning. You look out over fields rolling down to the Solent, with cargo ships chugging along like lazy giants. Not a soul in sight, just gulls wheeling about. I lugged my bag inside, dumped it on the plush sofa, and cracked open a window to let in that briny breeze.

First impressions? Cosy as a hug from your nan. The open-plan living space had a cracking wood burner (not needed in this heat, mind), a telly I barely glanced at, and a kitchenette stocked with all the basics—kettle on, tea brewing before I'd even unpacked. Ensuite bathroom was spotless, with fluffy towels that made me feel like royalty. But the real star was the decking. I dragged out a lounger, slathered on some factor 50, and cracked open my book—a battered copy of Wind in the Willows, perfect for the vibe. Sat there for hours, sipping squash, watching clouds drift by. No itinerary, no rush. Just me, the view, and the occasional rustle of rabbits in the garden below.

That garden, by the way—it's a proper suntrap, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, with a couple of benches tucked under apple trees. I wandered down for a mooch, picking a few blackberries (slightly sharp, but free pud). Lunch was a lazy affair: cheese sarnies made with bread from the local shop in Newport, eaten al fresco while the radio murmured forecasts of more sunshine. Light humour in the air when a cheeky squirrel nicked a crust right off my plate—cheeky sod darted up a tree, tail flicking like it owned the place. I laughed till my sides hurt, too chilled to chase it.

Afternoon blurred into napping on the deck, feet up, book slipping from my lap. The joy of it all was doing precisely nowt. No hikes up Tennyson Down or queuing for the Needles chairlift—just slowing right down, letting the island's rhythm wash over me. Newport's just a short hop away for a gentle potter: grabbed a pint at the Bugle Inn, nodded at locals nursing their halves, stocked up on pasties from the bakery. Back at the lodge, evening was fairy lights on the deck, a ready meal zapped in the microwave, and stargazing from the lounger. Orion winked down, and I thought, blimey, when did I last just sit and breathe?

Reflecting now, that first day hit me gentle-like: life's too full of rushing about. Here, in this little haven, I remembered how to linger. No grand adventures needed—the simple thrill of a sea-view lodge, a book, and bugger all else was spot on. If you're after unwinding proper, Deluxe Lodge is your spot. Can't wait to go back and do even less.
