I finally made it to the Isle of Wight after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive from the mainland. We'd caught the ferry from Portsmouth on a drizzly Thursday morning, me, the wife, and our two lads aged 8 and 10, all crammed into the car with enough crisps and juice cartons to survive a siege. The crossing was smooth enough, but as we trundled off the ramp at Fishbourne and headed south towards Shanklin, disaster struck in the form of a rogue seagull. The blighter dive-bombed our windscreen, leaving a Jackson Pollock splatter of guano that had me swearing under my breath while fumbling for the screenwash. "Dad, it's like bird art!" piped up little Jack from the back, which had us all in stitches. Classic family holiday start – nothing says 'relaxed break' like wiping gull muck off the glass at 30mph.

By early afternoon, we rolled up to the Deluxe Lodge With Parking And Ensuite 6, tucked away in a peaceful spot just off the Shanklin road. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. It's one of those proper Wight lodges – wooden-clad, compact but cosy, with its own parking spot right outside, which was a godsend after the ferry scrum. We piled out, stretching our legs, and I fumbled the key code on the smart lock twice before it beeped open. Inside, it was like stepping into a hug: open-plan living with a squishy sofa, a telly bigger than our one at home, and a kitchenette kitted out with everything from a toaster to a proper cafetière. The lads immediately claimed the two twin beds in the corner room, bouncing like it was a trampoline park, while we bagged the master with its massive ensuite – walk-in shower, fluffy towels, the lot. Ensuite 6 lives up to the name; it's deluxe without being poncy.

We dumped the bags and cracked on with settling in. First job: brew-up. I stuck the kettle on and rummaged for mugs, only for chaos to ensue when Tom knocked over a bag of doughnuts we'd smuggled from the ferry café. Icing sugar everywhere – floor, worktop, even in my hair. "Lodge life, eh?" I laughed, hoovering it up with the handheld Dyson while the boys giggled. It was that perfect mix of homely muddle and simple joy. Outside, the private patio caught the weak sun filtering through the clouds, with views over the lodge park's green lawns and a cheeky glimpse of the sea in the distance. We dragged out the camping chairs (supplied, thank goodness) and scoffed the remaining doughnuts with cups of tea, watching a couple of rabbits hop about. No itinerary, no rush – just us, breathing in that briny Isle of Wight air.

Popping out for first impressions of the area was a doddle; Shanklin's just a short stroll or two-minute drive away. We wandered down to the beach – proper sandy stuff, not the pebbly nonsense elsewhere – and paddled in the shallows, the water surprisingly balmy for April. The lads built a wonky sandcastle while I skimmed stones, feeling a proper twit when mine all sank like bricks. "You're rubbish, Dad!" they chorused, but it was all in good fun. Back at the lodge by teatime, we rustled up fish fingers and beans – nothing gourmet, but it tasted like heaven after the drive. Sat on the sofa with the sliding doors open, listening to the evening birdsong, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life at home's a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines; here, in this little deluxe haven, it all melted away. We're not flash holidaymakers – just a family chasing those small pleasures: a clean ensuite after sandy feet, parking without circling, and a lodge that feels like ours for the weekend. Can't wait for day two, but blimey, what a cracking start.
