About Isle Of Wight
Nestled in a quiet holiday park just outside Newport, the lodge hit me with instant wow-factor the moment I parked. It's one of those posh wooden beauties with a wraparound deck, and with autumn whispering in on a gentle breeze, the air smelled like damp leaves and sea salt—a proper Island welcome. I unlocked the door (key under the mat, as promised) and stepped into this airy open-plan space that screamed cosy retreat. The living area had these massive windows framing the wooded edges of the park, where the trees were just starting to turn fiery orange and red. No raging gales or lashing rain yet, mind— it was one of those mild September days where you can crack the windows without freezing your bits off. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The kitchen was kitted out like a telly chef's dream: shiny hob, massive fridge, and a dining table big enough for a proper family feast. I dumped my bags and brewed a fresh cuppa—none of that ferry-spill nonsense this time—then wandered through to the bedrooms. Three of 'em, all ensuite, with plush king-size beds piled high with duck-down duvets that looked begging for a nap. The master had French doors straight onto the deck, and there it was: the hot tub, steaming gently under its wooden surround, surrounded by fallen leaves swirling in the breeze. Autumn magic, that—warm bubbles against the cooling air, like the island was saying, "Settle in, mate, we've saved the best for now." I couldn't resist firing up the tub straight away. Slipped into my cozzie (yes, even in September—brass monkeys otherwise), and sank in with a sigh. The water was piping hot, jets pounding away the journey's kinks, while the sun set behind the trees, turning the sky all pink and purple. A few birds were chattering in the branches, and in the distance, you could hear the faint hum of Newport life—nothing intrusive, just enough to remind you you're on a proper Island escape. No hordes of day-trippers like in high summer; this time of year, it's peaceful, intimate, like you've got the place to yourself. Made me chuckle thinking how I'd have been queueing for chips at Ryde pier back in July, but here I was, sipping a cold beer from the lodge's well-stocked welcome pack, toes wrinkling in luxury. Popping inside for a rummage, I found the place spotless—soft towels folded just so, telly with all the channels, and a wood-burning stove ready for if the evenings turned nippy. Which they did, later on, as I rustled up fish and chips from the local Newport chippy (a five-minute drive, grease-proof paper and all). Sat on the deck under the string lights they'd switched on at dusk, munching away as the temperature dropped and mist rolled in from the Solent. That seasonal shift hit different—invigorating, rather than miserable. Made you appreciate the warmth inside, the way the lodge wrapped around you like a hug. Reflecting on it now, arriving in that autumn hush made me realise how knackered I'd been from city grind. No distractions, just this perfect bubble of comfort shaped by the season's mellow vibe. The fading leaves, the clearer skies, the hot tub's defiant heat—it all conspired to make those first hours pure bliss. If you're chasing that off-peak Island charm, this lodge is your spot. Can't wait to go back when the frost sparkles. |
