About Isle Of Wight
I finally made it to the Isle of Wight after a bit of a faff with the ferry from Portsmouth—nothing major, just me spilling half my cuppa down my shirt as the boat rocked into the Solent. It was mid-autumn, that crisp October stretch where the leaves are turning gold but the wind still has a cheeky bite, and I was buzzing to check into Bembridge Premier, a cosy little cottage I'd booked for a three-day getaway. The drive from the ferry terminal to Bembridge took about half an hour, skirting Ryde's outskirts, and as we trundled along those narrow lanes lined with brambles heavy with blackberries, I could already feel the season wrapping around me like a favourite scarf.

Pulling up to the cottage just as the afternoon light started to fade—proper golden hour stuff, with the sun dipping low over the Solent—I was chuffed to bits. Bembridge Premier sits in a quiet spot near the village heart, close enough to pop out for a pint but tucked away for that proper escape feel. It's one of those classic Wight cottages: whitewashed walls, a pitched roof, and a front garden bursting with late-season chrysanthemums that bobbed in the breeze like they were waving hello. The owners had left the key in a handy spot, and stepping inside, the first whiff hit me—freshly baked scones on the kitchen table, a right treat after the journey. Autumn had clearly influenced their welcome; there was a log basket brimming by the wood burner, ready for evenings when the chill creeps in.

My first impressions? Blimey, it was homely without being twee. The living room had these squashy sofas facing a telly bigger than my flat's, and big windows framing views of the Bembridge Marshes, all misty and ethereal in the October haze. I dumped my bags and cracked open the bifold doors to the patio—mind you, I had to wrap up in my woolly jumper sharpish, as the sea air nipped at my knuckles. Outside, the garden was a riot of autumn colour: fallen leaves carpeting the lawn in reds and oranges, and a hammock swaying gently, though I gave that a miss lest I end up swinging like a soggy tea bag in the wind. It was the sort of setup that screamed 'relax', shaped entirely by the season—no basking in summer sun here, but that mellow, introspective vibe where you fancy a brew and a good ponder.

Wandering down to Bembridge Beach, a ten-minute stroll away, was pure magic. The tide was out, exposing vast expanses of glistening mudflats that the wading birds loved—oyster catchers piping away like they owned the place. The beach huts, all painted in faded pastels, looked even more photogenic against the slate-grey sky, and I couldn't resist a daft selfie, wind tousling my hair like I'd been electrocuted. Light humour in the air, innit? I nearly tripped over a clump of samphire while trying to look all windswept and interesting. Back at the cottage, I lit the wood burner—crackling away merrily, filling the room with that smoky, comforting scent—and rustled up fish and chips from the village chippy. Eating them on the patio as the sun set, wrapped in a blanket, watching the Solent turn inky, it hit me: this time of year strips things back, no crowds, just you and the island's quiet rhythm.

That evening, supping a local Goddards ale by the fire, I had a moment of gentle self-reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind—deadlines, bustle, the lot—but here, in this snug bolt-hole with autumn painting everything in soft hues, I realised how knackered I'd been. Bembridge Premier wasn't just a stay; it was a seasonal hug, reminding me to slow down and savour the simple stuff. First impressions? Spot on. If you're chasing that off-peak Wight charm, this is your spot—cosy, characterful, and perfectly pitched for autumn's gentle embrace. Can't wait to return when the frost sparkles on those marshes.
