About Isle Of Wight
First impressions? Blimey, what a belter. The lodge is one of those cosy stone cottages that hug the hillside, with Ventnor’s sea breezes whispering through the garden. I parked up, lugging my bag through the little gate, and there it was: three snug bedrooms upstairs, all with those sash windows framing glimpses of the Channel. Downstairs, the open-plan kitchen-diner-lounge screamed “kick back and pretend you’re local.” A wood burner (not lit yet, mind, but tempting), squishy sofas, and a telly bigger than my flat’s. The hosts had left fresh milk, bread, and a cheeky note saying “Enjoy the hidden Wight!”—as if they knew what was coming. Unpacking done in a flash, I fancied a wander before tea. No grand plans; I just followed my nose down a winding path behind the lodge that isn’t on any map worth a toss. Ventnor’s got that layered feel—town below, cliffs above—and this path ducked into a forgotten corner of Upper Ventnor, past wonky terraced houses dripping with honeysuckle. Five minutes in, and I’d lost the world: stumbled on a tiny pebble beach you could miss if you blinked. Not the touristy Bonchurch bit a mile off, but a secret cove where the waves chucked up sea glass like confetti. Sat there on a driftwood log, feet in the shallows, listening to gulls squawk—pure magic. Who needs Sandown’s crowds when you’ve got this by happy accident? Back at the lodge for a brew, I poked about the garden, a wild patch of lavender and herbs that backed onto woodland. That’s when I clocked another gem: a concealed gate leading to a network of cliff paths locals keep schtum about. Evening light turning golden, I nipped out again, no torch needed yet. The path twisted through brambly thickets, popping out at an old smugglers’ lookout—properly atmospheric, with graffiti from the 1800s etched into the rock. Ventnor’s undercliff is a labyrinth like that; get lost for half an hour and you unearth WWII pillboxes turned bird hides or wild garlic groves that smell like heaven in spring. I picked a handful (okay, a carrier bag’s worth), giggling at how I’d look like a forager gone rogue. Supper was simple—pasta scoffed at the pine table, wine from the Co-op up the road, windows flung open to the salt air. First night in, staring at the stars (fewer lights here than back home), I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life’s rush, innit? Always apps and itineraries. But here, in this unassuming lodge, getting properly lost had unearthed joys I’d never planned: the thrill of the unplanned, the quiet nod to slowing down. No regrets about that farm lane fiasco—it set the tone. Next morning dawned misty, but by brekkie, sun was out. Coffee in hand, I eyed the map (ha!) and headed for another accidental detour—a footpath from the lodge snaking to a hidden waterfall grotto locals call the “Whispering Caves,” just shy of a mile away in the wooded fringes. Water trickling over ferns, echoes bouncing like secrets. Bloody brilliant. The 3 Bed Lodge isn’t flash, but it’s the perfect launchpad for these off-the-beaten gems. If you’re after Ventnor’s soul, not the selfie spots, book it. You might take a wrong turn, but that’s half the fun. |
