About Lake District
Pulling up to Wordsworth Premier Select felt like stumbling into a hug from the countryside itself. Tucked just outside Cockermouth, this Premier Select lodge is proper Lake District magic – a cosy wooden haven with that just-right mix of rustic charm and mod cons. We unloaded amid giggles as the youngest tripped over his own rucksack, scattering crisps everywhere. "Welcome to lodge life chaos," I quipped, brushing them off the gravel. The place is part of a select handful of these premium spots, all low-key and surrounded by rolling fields that stretch towards the Solway Coast vibes without you even needing to leave the garden. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Stepping inside, the open-plan living space hit us with a waft of fresh pine and that faint, comforting scent of wood burner ready for action. Plump sofas begged for a flop, and the kitchen was a dream – gleaming worktops, a massive fridge for our picnic spoils, and even a Nespresso pod machine that had me grinning like a kid at Christmas. "No more instant muck on holiday," I declared, brewing the first round while the kids raided the welcome hamper. It had local treats like Kendal mint cake and a jar of proper Cumbrian chutney – simple pleasures that screamed family break. We dumped the bags and headed straight out to explore the grounds. The lodges are spaced just right, private but with that neighbourly nod if you pass someone walking their spaniel. Our decking overlooked a wildflower meadow, perfect for kicking a ball about or just parking your bum with a cuppa. The sun was dipping low, painting the fells gold, and we cracked open a bottle of fizz (non-alcoholic for the nippers) to toast our arrival. Chaos ensued when the football went rogue into the hedge – echoes of my driving mishap – but that's the joy of it, innit? No schedules, just muddy wellies and daft laughs. As the evening settled, we fired up the barbecue (gas, thank goodness – no faffing with charcoal in the dusk). Sausages sizzling, potatoes baking in foil, and the kids toasting marshmallows on sticks we'd foraged nearby. Sat there, flames flickering, I had a quiet moment of self-reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but here, in this little pocket of Lake District peace, it all fades. Watching my lot's faces lit by the fire, covered in sticky goo and pure contentment, I realised these are the bits that stick – not the grand adventures, but the unhurried unwinding. Wordsworth Premier Select nailed it from the off: a relaxed family bolthole where the only plan is breathing it all in. By bedtime, we'd barely scratched the surface – a quick stroll to the edge of the grounds revealed a babbling brook and views that make your heart swell. Snuggled into the king-sized bed with its fluffy duck-down duvet, engine of the day finally idling, I drifted off thinking: this is what holidays should be. Simple, chaotic, and utterly spot-on. Can't wait for day two. |
