Plump sofas begged for a flop, and the kitchen was a dream – gleaming worktops, a massive fridge for our picnic spoils, and even a Nespresso pod machine that had me grinning like a kid at Christmas. "No more instant muck on holiday," I declared, brewing the first round while the kids raided the welcome hamper. It had local treats like Kendal mint cake and a jar of proper Cumbrian chutney – simple pleasures that screamed family break.

Snuggled into the king-sized bed with its fluffy duck-down duvet, engine of the day finally idling, I drifted off thinking: this is what holidays should be. Simple, chaotic, and utterly spot-on.
