About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Waterside Lodge in Windermere – a proper Lake District jaunt that started with me forgetting to pack the kids’ wellies and ending with a daft little mishap involving a rogue sheep. It was a drizzly Friday afternoon in early autumn, the sort where the fells loom misty and mysterious under low clouds, and the A591 snakes alongside Windermere like it’s showing off. We’d piled into the car from down south, me, my wife Sarah, and our two lads, Finn (10) and Theo (7), with the boot stuffed full of crisps, board games, and enough snacks to feed a small army. About five miles out, just past Bowness, I misjudged a sharp bend – nothing dramatic, just clipped the verge and sent a muddy spray up the windscreen. “Dad’s turned into a rally driver!” Finn hooted from the back, while Sarah rolled her eyes and muttered something about me sticking to sat-navs. Cue laughter all round, and a quick stop to wipe the muck off. Classic family holiday start, innit?

By the time we trundled down the quiet lane to Waterside Lodge, the rain had eased into that soft patter that makes everything smell like wet earth and pine. There it was, tucked right on the lakeside, a cosy stone-built beauty with a pitched roof and those big windows framing the rippling water of Windermere. I parked up on the gravel drive, heart lifting at the sight – no grand mansion, just a proper Cumbrian lodge, the kind that whispers “relax” from the off. We tumbled out, bags in tow, and Finn immediately dashed to the low wooden fence, yelling, “Mum, the lake’s massive! Can we swim?” Spoiler: no, lad, it’s brass monkey weather.

Unlocking the door felt like coming home. Inside, it was all warm wood beams, a squishy L-shaped sofa begging for a collapse, and a wood-burning stove already set with kindling – pure lodge bliss. The open-plan living space opened straight onto the lake view through floor-to-ceiling glass, with herons pottering about on the shore like nosy neighbours. Kitchen was compact but brilliant: Belfast sink, Aga humming away, and a fridge we raided pronto for local ales and fizz. Sarah cracked open a bottle of prosecco while I wrestled the luggage, and the boys discovered the games cupboard – Jenga, Uno, the lot. Chaos erupted in seconds; Theo knocked over a lamp chasing a rogue marble, sending it skittering across the slate floor. “Lodge life, eh?” I chuckled, sweeping it up. No harm done, just that joyful pandemonium you crave on a family break.

First impressions? Magic. We dumped bags in the bedrooms – ours with a super-kingsize bed and en-suite looking out over the water, the lads sharing a twin with bunks that had them whooping like pirates. Downstairs again, we cracked on with unpacking, but who were we kidding? The view won. Stepping out the French doors onto the private patio, the lake lapped just yards away, framed by bracken-covered fells. Finn and Theo hurled stones into the shallows, giggling as ripples spread, while Sarah and I sipped drinks, watching the sun dip low and paint the water gold. Simple pleasures, these – no theme parks, no schedules, just us and the Lake District doing its thing.

That evening, as we rustled up fish and chips from a nearby takeaway (proper greasy, vinegary ones – none of your healthy nonsense), I had a quiet moment by the window. Staring out at the darkening lake, steam rising off the water, I reflected on how these little escapes ground you. Life back home’s a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but here, in this unpretentious lodge, it all fades. A minor car splatter, a marble mishap – they’re the threads that weave the best memories. Waterside Lodge nailed it from the off: relaxed, real, and ridiculously welcoming. Three days ahead, but honestly, that arrival sealed the deal. Here’s to more of this.
