About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Walpole Premier in Cockermouth – it was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from the M6, but of course, I managed to turn it into a proper comedy of errors. Picture this: it’s a drizzly Friday afternoon in the Lake District, the kind where the fells loom mysteriously through the mist, and I’m humming along to some cracking Radio 2 tunes in my little hatchback, packed to the gills with wellies, a dodgy picnic hamper, and enough tea bags to last a siege. We’re talking me, my mate Dave, and his daft spaniel, Monty, who’s already eyeing up the boot for a mid-journey snack raid.

Everything’s tickety-boo until we hit the winding lanes around Cockermouth. Sat-nav says “turn left in 300 yards,” but in true British fashion, there’s a cheeky tractor chugging along at snail’s pace, forcing me to brake like a learner driver. In the panic, I miss the junction entirely, end up splashing through a massive puddle that soaks Monty’s fur into a soggy mop, and then – get this – the windscreen wipers decide to pack up. Proper conked out, leaving me peering through a smeary haze like I’m in a low-budget fog horror flick. Dave’s in stitches, yelling “You’ve turned us into extras from The Wicker Man!” while Monty shakes himself all over the seats, turning the car into a mobile sauna. We pull over on a verge near the River Cocker, faff about with fuses for a good 20 minutes, and finally get them working just as the rain eases off. By now, we’re late, a bit frazzled, and I’m questioning my life choices – why didn’t I just book a boring Premier Inn?

But then, there it was: Walpole Premier, tucked away in a quiet spot just a stone’s throw from Cockermouth’s high street. Pulling into the drive, the chaos melted away faster than ice cream on a Grasmere summer day. This isn’t some soulless holiday let; it’s a proper Cumbrian gem – a cosy stone cottage that screams “welcome home” with its pitched slate roof and those classic Lakeland windows framing views of rolling fields. We tumble out, Monty bounding ahead like he owns the place, and unlock the door to a wave of pure bliss. The living room hits you first: plump sofas piled with cushions, a wood-burning stove begging for a crackling fire (we got one going pronto), and telly above the mantel for those rainy evenings. It’s all warm woods, soft lighting, and that faint scent of fresh linen – none of your musty BandB whiff here.

Kicking off our boots in the hall (mud mats galore, bless ’em), we explore. The kitchen’s a dream for lazy holiday cooks like us – granite worktops gleaming, a big Aga-style cooker, and every gadget you could wish for, from cafetière to blender. Dave immediately raids the welcome pack: local biscuits, a bottle of Cumbrian ale, and milk in the fridge. Upstairs, the bedrooms are snug as a bug – our king-size one with fluffy pillows, crisp white sheets, and an en-suite that’s more spa than shower room. Monty claims the rug by the window, nose twitching at the garden birds.

First impressions? Bloody marvellous. Sat out on the patio with mugs of builder’s tea as the sun dipped behind the fells, I had one of those gentle “pinch me” moments. Here I was, after my daft arrival debacle, in this perfect pocket of Lake District heaven. It made me reflect: life’s too short for perfect plans – it’s the mishaps that make the memories, and Walpole Premier turned our soggy start into something truly special. If you’re after a base for pottering around Cockermouth’s pubs or a gentle stroll by the river, this is it. We hadn’t even unpacked properly, and already I was plotting a return. What a cracking find.
