About Lake District
Stepping inside, the kitchen hit me first. It's kitted out like a dream for a foodie like me: Aga humming away, stocked with Cumbrian herbs, and a welcome basket groaning under the weight of homemade scones, jam, and a bottle of local elderflower pressé. No faffing about with dusty cupboards here – everything gleamed, ready for action. I dumped my bags and cracked on with dinner, my first cooking attempt of the trip. I'd picked up a brace of trout from Cockermouth market that morning (well, en route, after the sheep fiasco), and fired them up with lemon and wild garlic from the garden patch outside. Blimey, they were fresh – flaky, buttery perfection, served with new potatoes boiled in the Aga. Sat at that sturdy oak table overlooking the fells, pint of Lakeland lager in hand (nabbed from the local offy), I felt like I'd won the holiday lottery. Who needs Michelin stars when you've got this? Next morning, breakfast was non-negotiable: full Cumbrian fry-up. Rashers from the butcher's stall at market – thick, smoky bacon that curled just right – plus black pudding so peppery it woke me up proper. I botched the poached eggs a tad (too much vinegar, runny disaster), but slathered on some local mustard and laughed it off. Self-reflection moment: I'm no Jamie Oliver, am I? Always overcomplicating, when the joy's in the simplicity of these local gems. Wandered down to the nearby Cockermouth farmers' market – five minutes' stroll, stalls heaving with artisan breads, venison pies, and cheeses that could make a grown man weep. Snagged a wedge of smoked Appleby's Cheshire and some sticky toffee pudding for later; the vendors were proper friendly, chatting about their goats like family. Pub lunch called next. The close-by Crown Inn – a classic Lakeland boozer with low ceilings and flagstone floors – served up the best pie I've had in ages. Steak and ale, pastry like a duvet, washed down with a pint of Jennings Cocker Hoop. I overheard locals nattering about the fells, but I was too busy savouring to join in. Back at the cottage, afternoon tea turned experimental: attempted a Victoria sponge with market strawberries, but it came out a bit lopsided. Chuckled to myself, slathered it with clotted cream anyway – tasted like heaven, imperfections and all. Evening brought fish and chips from the chippy in town, delivered piping hot to the door. Crispy batter, mushy peas sharp as you like, and that vinegar tang. Ate on the patio as the sun set, reflecting on how these simple eats – market hauls, pub grub, cottage cooks – make a place feel like home. Wainwright Premier isn't just a stay; it's a taste of the Lakes, one delicious mishap at a time. Can't wait to return for round two. |
