About Lake District
I finally made it to Uvedale Premier Select near Cockermouth after a right faff of a drive up from the M6. Picture this: I'd packed the car the night before, buzzing about my three-day jaunt in the Lake District, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Penrith. Some cheeky roadworks sign sent me down a single-track lane that felt like it was leading to Narnia – or worse, a dead end with sheep glaring at me. Twenty minutes of reversing around blind corners later (with me muttering expletives that'd make my nan blush), I emerged, slightly frazzled but laughing at my own daftness. Lesson learned: never trust tech when Lakeland backroads are involved.

Pulling up to Uvedale just as the afternoon light was turning golden, I was gobsmacked. Tucked away in a peaceful spot overlooking rolling fells, this Premier Select cottage is the sort of place that screams "cosy escape." Stone-built with a thatched roof vibe, it nestles into the landscape like it's always been there. I parked on the gravel drive, grabbed my wellies, and stepped inside to that instant hit of wood-burner warmth and fresh linen scent. First impressions? Spot on. The open-plan living space is all beamed ceilings and plush sofas, perfect for kipping after a hike, with a kitchen that had every gadget going – though I mostly used the kettle for endless cups of tea.

Day one proper kicked off with weather that was classic Lake District: bright blue skies one minute, threatening clouds the next. I laced up my boots and headed out for a gentle stroll along the nearby paths towards the River Cocker, just a stone's throw from the cottage. The air was crisp, alive with birdsong, and those initial views of the fells rising sharp against the horizon had me grinning like a kid. Uvedale's position is brilliant for this – you're straight into the action without faffing about in the car. I ambled past drystone walls, spotting the odd Herdwick sheep eyeing me suspiciously, and nipped down to the riverbank where the water rushed over pebbles like it was late for somewhere.

But oh, the British weather – it's got a wicked sense of humour. By midday, the sun vanished behind a duvet of grey, and a fine drizzle started that turned into proper mizzle. My grand plan for a longer hike up to a nearby viewpoint? Scuppered. Instead, I adapted like a pro, ducking into a sheltered spot under some oaks for a brew from my flask, watching the mist swirl dramatically over the valley. It was one of those moments that makes you reflect: here I was, miles from the daily grind, soaked to the skin but utterly content. Why rush? The Lakes teach you to roll with it, don't they? That gentle self-nudge reminded me life's too short for rigid itineraries.

Come afternoon, the clouds parted just enough for another go. I plotted a circular walk from Uvedale, sticking to the local trails that weave through meadows and up low hills within a couple of miles. The paths were muddy in the best way – proper squelch underfoot – and popping over a stile revealed panoramic views back towards Cockermouth's spires peeking through the trees. Light humour in the mishaps: I slipped once on a slick bit of grass, landing bum-first with a splat that echoed off the fells. No one around to witness, thank goodness, but it had me chuckling all the way back.

Evening brought a full-on downpour, drumming on the cottage roof like applause. Cosied up by the fire, I gazed out at the weather's latest tantrum, already plotting tomorrow's routes. First impressions of Uvedale? It's a hiker's dream base – close to the action, weather-proof charm, and that intangible magic of the Lakes. If you're after an intro to Lakeland's moody beauty, this is your spot. Can't wait to return and let the paths call me again.
