About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Turner Premier 3 near Cockermouth – a proper Lakeland adventure that started with a daft little mishap. I’d packed the car the night before in a rush, only to realise halfway through Penrith that I’d left my favourite walking boots behind. Typical me, always one step behind. No bother, though; a quick stop at a petrol station for some emergency wellies turned what could’ve been a grumble into a laugh. By the time I wound my way along those narrow Cumbrian lanes, flanked by drystone walls and the odd sheep eyeing me suspiciously, I was buzzing with anticipation for my three-day jaunt at this cosy pet-friendly cottage.

Pulling up to Turner Premier 3 felt like stumbling on a secret hideaway. Tucked just outside Cockermouth, it’s one of those spots that doesn’t scream for attention – no neon signs or coach parties here. The cottage itself is a beaut: a smart, modern three-bedder with all the home comforts, from the wood-burning stove (which I eyed greedily despite the mild weather) to the private hot tub out back, half-hidden by a lush garden that backed straight onto open fields. First impressions? Blissful seclusion. I dumped my bags, cracked open a brew, and just stood there, taking in the view of rolling fells under a classic Lake District sky – one minute blue, the next threatening rain. It’s the sort of place that whispers “relax” rather than shouts it.

But the real magic kicked off when I decided to embrace the joy of getting lost, right from that first afternoon. No Ordnance Survey maps for me; I fancied wandering off the beaten track, letting serendipity lead the way. A five-minute stroll from the cottage took me down a barely marked footpath behind the garden, and blimey, what a hidden gem. It spat me out at a tucked-away spot along the River Cocker – not the touristy stretches near town, but a wild, overgrown bend where the water gurgled over mossy stones, and kingfishers darted like blue bullets. I plonked down on a fallen log, wellies and all, and watched a heron stalk fish with comical dignity. No one else around; just the rush of water and the wind rustling hawthorns. It was one of those moments that makes you reflect – here I was, a city lad who usually stresses over deadlines, suddenly utterly content in the quiet. Who needs grand hikes when accidental discoveries like this recharge the soul?

Emboldened, I pushed on the next morning, veering off another unassuming track from the cottage grounds. This led to a forgotten quarry path – an off-the-beaten-path marvel I’d never have found on a sat-nav. Overgrown with brambles and ferns, it climbed gently to a vantage point overlooking a secret tarn, its surface like polished slate under the sun. I picnicked there with cheese butties from Cockermouth’s brilliant little bakery (grabbed en route, naturally), chuckling at how I’d nearly tripped over a family of rabbits on the way up. The humour hit when a sudden shower forced me to shelter under an ancient oak – soaked but grinning, I thought, “This is proper Lake District therapy.” No crowds, no Instagram queues; just the thrill of unearthing these pockets of paradise by mistake.

That first full day wrapped with an evening potter to a nearby wood I spotted from the hot tub – another accidental find, mere yards from Turner Premier 3. Ancient oaks and beeches formed a cathedral of green, with bluebells nodding in the breeze (a tad early, but still enchanting). I got properly lost in the best way, looping back as dusk fell, pheasants clucking in alarm. Sinking into the cottage’s plush sofa afterwards, steaming mug in hand, I felt a gentle pang of self-reflection: in our rush-rush lives, we forget how vital these unscripted detours are. They remind you that the Lakes’ true treasures aren’t on the postcards, but in the nooks you stumble upon when you let go.

My three days at Turner Premier 3 were defined by these serendipitous spots – proof that the best holidays come from ditching the plan and savouring the surprises. If you’re after a base for such hidden joys, this is your spot.
