About Lake District
Pulling into the lodge's spot in this tucked-away corner near Penrith, I was gobsmacked by the first impressions. It's one of those proper Lake District gems—a cosy timber-clad haven with a veranda that screams "put your feet up and forget the world." The garden's a riot of wildflowers and lush grass, sloping gently towards a view of rolling fells that had me grinning like an idiot before I'd even turned off the engine. No grand mansion, mind—just the right size for one, with that signature Lakeland charm: low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging to be lit, and windows framing the kind of scenery that makes you breathe deeper. First order of business? Unpack minimally, chuck on the kettle, and flop onto the squishy sofa with a cuppa. The place smelled of fresh pine and possibility, and I wasted no time cracking open my battered copy of *Swallows and Amazons*. Reading in that light—soft, golden, filtering through the trees—felt like cheating at holidays. No itinerary, no hikes up Scafell (tempting as they are from afar), just me, a book, and the occasional rustle of leaves outside. I chuckled to myself imagining mates back home ticking off peaks while I was mastering the art of lounging. The garden was my playground for the first afternoon. I dragged out a camping chair, brewed more tea (proper builder's, strong enough to stand a spoon in), and watched clouds scud over the nearby hills. It's funny how, in a place like this, "doing nothing" becomes an event. Birds chirping, a light breeze carrying the scent of damp earth—pure bliss. I even had a go at sketching the view, though it came out looking like a potato had attacked a pencil. Light relief, that. Venturing out? Only as far as a gentle potter around the immediate lanes—maybe a mile's amble to spot some Herdwick sheep grazing nearby, their woolly faces peering over dry-stone walls. No rushing; just slow steps, stopping to pick a few blackberries (slightly tart, but free). Back at the lodge, the veranda became HQ for sunset watching, mug in hand, as the fells turned pink. That first evening, I lit the stove early, cracked open a bottle of red, and let the warmth seep in. Cosy doesn't cover it—it's like the lodge was built to hug you. Reflecting on it now, as I sat there with the day's light fading, I realised how knackered I'd been from city life. Always chasing the next thing, aren't we? This place stripped that away—no signal stressing me out, just the joy of slowing right down. Signature Lodge 2 isn't about epic adventures; it's a bolthole for rediscovering the simple thrill of bugger all. By bedtime, tucked under a quilt that smelled faintly of lavender, I was already plotting a return. Three days of this? Absolute heaven. |
