About High Longlands.
Grange-over-Sands nestles between Morecambe Bay and the Lake District fells, boasting one of England's mildest northern climates. Once a fishing village, the Furness Railway turned it into a fashionable Edwardian resort. Enjoy the traffic-free promenade, ornamental gardens, golf, brass band concerts and superb birdwatching. Nearby: Lake Windermere (8 miles), charming Bowness-on-Windermere and Hawkshead, Cartmel (home of sticky toffee pudding, racecourse and L’Enclume, UK’s 4th best restaurant), Levens Hall’s topiary, Holker Hall, Furness Abbey, Sizergh Castle and Conishead Priory. The 25-mile Cistercian Way starts here. Ideal base for the southern lakes. Nearby attractions.
About Lake District
Pulling into the drive at Grange-over-Sands felt like slipping into a warm bath after a chilly day. High Longlands is one of those proper Cumbrian stone cottages, all cosy and tucked away with views that make you go "ooh" without even trying. It's perched just right, close enough to hear the gentle lap of Morecambe Bay if the wind's in the right direction, but far enough to feel like your own private nook. I arrived mid-afternoon on a drizzly Friday, the sort of soft rain that doesn't bother anyone who's ever spent five minutes in these parts. Unloaded the boot, kicked off my boots, and there it was: instant holiday mode. First impressions? Blimey, it's the kind of place that hugs you. The living room's got this massive inglenook fireplace begging for a lazy log fire (I cheated with the gas switch at first, mind). Plump sofas piled with cushions, and a telly that's there if you want it but who needs it with those windows? Stepping out the back door into the garden was the real kicker. It's a proper wildish affair—overgrown in the best way, with bird feeders dangling and a couple of weathered benches overlooking the estuary. I plonked myself down with a cuppa, watching the tide creep in and out like it had all the time in the world. No rush, no agenda. That's the joy of it, innit? Doing sod all, but doing it brilliantly. Day one was all about settling in slow. I wandered the garden paths, spotting fat bumblebees on the lavender and a cheeky robin eyeing my biscuit crumbs. Light humour kicked in when I tried "helping" by filling the feeders—spilled half the seeds and attracted a flock of sparrows that dive-bombed me like feathered Kamikazes. Laughed my socks off, brushed myself down, and retreated inside with a book. Curled up by the window with a pot of Earl Grey and Muriel Spark's latest reread, the world outside blurred into that perfect Lakeland haze. No hikes up Scafell, no boat trips—just the tick of the clock and the rustle of pages. Saturday dawned brighter, so I fancied a gentle potter down to the promenade in Grange-over-Sands, all of five minutes away. Strolled along the prom, breathing in that briny air, grabbed a paper and a sausage roll from the bakery (none of your fancy avocado toast here). Back at the cottage by elevenses, I flopped in the garden hammock with a flask of coffee, watching clouds scud over the fells in the distance. It's funny how slowing down hits you—midway through the afternoon, book forgotten on my lap, I had one of those quiet moments. Lying there, I realised I'd been chasing "busy" for months back home, ticking boxes like they mattered. Here? Time stretches. Birds chirp, bay sparkles, and suddenly you're just... present. No grand epiphanies, just a soft nudge: maybe this is enough. Evening brought more of the same bliss. Lit that fire proper, cracked open a bottle of red, and grazed on cheese and crackers while flicking through a dog-eared Ordnance Survey map—not for planning, just dreaming. High Longlands wraps you in that unhurried glow; it's less a holiday and more a deep breath. By Sunday morning, as I sipped tea in the sun-dappled kitchen, I was already plotting a return. Who knew joy could be this simple? |
