About Lake District
Elonby 3 is a cracking little stone cottage, tucked away in that peaceful pocket near the Eden Valley, with views that make you forget the world. But honestly, it was the locals who turned my first impressions into pure gold. No sooner had I lugged my bags in and cracked open a cuppa, than old Tom from next door popped his head over the garden wall. He’s this wiry chap in his seventies, with a flat cap that’s seen better days and a sheepdog called Buster who looks like he’s auditioning for a pedigree show. “New ‘ere, are ya?” he grinned, eyeing my London plates. “Don’t mind the sheep – they wander, like me missus after a sherry.” We got chatting about the weather (isn’t it always?), and he regaled me with tales of the great flood of ’05, when the River Eden rose so high it turned his shed into a submarine. “Should’ve built it with wings,” he deadpanned, and I nearly snorted my tea. That set the tone. Wandering down to the nearby village shop – a five-minute amble through drystone walls and bleating lambs – I bumped into Maureen, the postmistress who doubles as the unofficial mayor. She’s got this booming laugh and a counter piled high with scones she bakes herself. “You staying at Elonby 3? Lovely spot, that. Mind the ghost – only comes out on full moons, mind.” I laughed, figuring it was a wind-up, but she swore blind it was true, spinning a yarn about a Victorian farmer who haunts the lane after losing his herd to foot-and-mouth. Over a flapjack (spot on, by the way), she quizzed me on city life. “London? Full of folk rushing about like headless chickens. Up here, we take our time – unless it’s lambing season, then it’s all hands on deck!” Her stories had me in stitches, especially the one about the time a herd of escaped alpacas blocked the road to the pub. Later that first afternoon, as I settled into the cottage’s snug lounge with its wood burner begging for a log or two, I nipped out for milk and met Derek, the butcher from the farm shop round the corner. Bloke’s built like a fell pony, hands like shovels from years of wrangling livestock. “Fresh sausages, lad? Made ‘em meself this morning – secret’s in the thyme.” We ended up yarning for half an hour about his glory days herding Herdwick sheep up Blencathra (close enough to spot from the cottage window). He’s got this deadpan humour: “Tourists come up, see the views, and think it’s all poetry. Try mending a fence in horizontal rain – that’s the real Wordsworth!” I bought enough meat for a week, just to keep the chat going. Sitting there that evening, pint in hand, gazing at the misty fells from the garden, I had a quiet moment of reflection. In the rush of everyday life back home, I rarely stop to natter with strangers, let alone ones as colourful as this lot. These quirky Cumbrians, with their tall tales and warm welcomes, made arriving at Elonby 3 feel like stepping into a proper community, not just a holiday let. It’s funny how a forgotten petrol stop led to the best first day ever – proof that the best stories come from the people, not the postcard views. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings, but if it’s more characters like Tom, Maureen, and Derek, I’m all in. |
