About Lake District
Elonby 3 Premier is a proper gem, tucked away in this peaceful pocket of the Lake District, just a stone's throw from Penrith's buzz without the hordes. It's one of those Premier cottages from Snaptrip—cosy, well-kitted-out, with a kitchen that screamed "get cooking, lad." First impressions? Spot on. The place welcomes you with a homely vibe: flagged floors, a wood-burner begging for a fire later, and views out the window to rolling fells that make you forget the coffee catastrophe. But let's be honest, my three-day jaunt was all about the grub. Arriving mid-afternoon, I unpacked straight into that gleaming kitchen, dreaming of feasts. Right off the bat, I nipped to the village shop in nearby Littleton—under five miles, easy peasy—for essentials. Grabbed some rashers of bacon from the butcher's counter, smoked over local wood, and a loaf of crusty bread still warm from the oven. Back at the cottage, my first "meal" was a classic: bacon butty with a dollop of Branston pickle. Sat at the farmhouse table, munching away, I thought, blimey, this is living. The cottage's Aga-style cooker was a dream—hot as you like, perfect for sizzling that lot without a hitch. No burnt offerings yet. Evening rolled in, and hunger struck proper. I'd clocked The Strickland Arms in nearby Hackthorpe on the way—quintessential Lakeland pub, all low beams and roaring fire. Strolled over (well, drove the two miles, let's not get heroic), and ordered the pie of the day: steak and ale, encased in buttery pastry that flaked like it should. Paired it with a pint of Loweswater Gold from the local brewer—crisp, golden, went down a treat. Chatted with the barman about the best spots for fell walks, but mostly we bonded over the grub. "Best pie in Cumbria," he reckoned. I wasn't arguing. Back at Elonby, I cracked open that ale I'd brought, savouring the quiet with a wedge of the cheddar and some oatcakes from the Penrith market stall I'd hit earlier. Next morning—still day one, mind—woke to birdsong and the promise of brekkie. The cottage's welcome pack had tea, coffee, and biscuits, but I fancied posh. Drove to the Penrith farmers' market (practically on the doorstep), loaded up on free-range eggs, venison sausages from a chap who'd shot 'em himself, and jars of gooseberry chutney. Cooking attempt number two: full Cumbrian fry-up on the hob. Sausages popped and spat, eggs fried sunny-side up, toast from the breadmaker plug-in (clever touch, that). Sat on the patio overlooking the garden, plate piled high, feeling like king of the fells. Bit of light humour there—I overdid the black pudding and ended up with a purple tongue for photos. Proper daft. But here's a gentle moment of reflection, tucking into that lot: sometimes you realise life's best bits aren't the grand hikes or Instagram views, but these simple plates, shared (or not) in a place like Elonby 3 Premier. The kitchen became my hub—stocked with herbs from the window boxes, I even whipped up a rough lamb stew from market cuts for lunch, slow-cooked while I pottered about. Tender as you like, with carrots and spuds that tasted of the soil. By evening, back to the pub for fish and chips—haddock fresh from Morecambe Bay, chips triple-cooked to perfection. Elonby 3 Premier nailed those first impressions: a base for feasting that felt like home from the off. If you're after a food-focused Lake District escape, this is your spot. Can't wait to return for more mishaps and meals. |
