About Lake District
Pulled up to Elonby 2 just as the sun was peeking through the clouds, that perfect Lake District light that makes everything look like a postcard. It's this cosy stone cottage tucked away in a quiet spot near the Eden Valley, with views straight out to the rolling hills. The key was under the mat as promised, and stepping inside felt like a warm hug – low beams, a cracking Aga in the kitchen, and a wood burner ready for action. I dumped my bags, cracked open a window, and inhaled that fresh, peaty air. First impressions? Bliss. But this was the Lakes, innit? Weather's the boss here, and it wasted no time reminding me. Day one, I laced up my boots for a gentle hike along the nearby paths towards the River Eden. The forecast had promised "bright spells," so off I went, striding out with a spring in my step, imagining epic fell-top panoramas. The first hour was magic – sunshine glinting off the water, sheep bleating lazily, and wildflowers nodding in the breeze. I even spotted a red squirrel darting up a hawthorn, which had me grinning like an idiot. But then, classic British weather kicked in. Out of nowhere, the sky turned moody, and a fine drizzle started – you know, the kind that soaks you through without you noticing till you're wringing out your socks. No drama, I thought, ducking under an ancient oak for shelter. Plan B: a muddy tramp along the riverbank instead of climbing higher. It turned into a proper adventure, slipping on wet stones and laughing at myself as I nearly went arse-over-tit into a bog. By the time I looped back to the cottage, soaked but buzzing, the rain had cleared to reveal a double rainbow arching over the fells. I lit the fire, brewed a pot of tea, and watched steam rise from my boots. That mishap made the day – forced me to slow down and savour the little things, rather than ticking off miles. Next morning, I was up early, eyeing the window warily. Blue skies! Hike two: a circuit up the local trails towards the low fells, nothing too gnarly, just enough to feel alive. The paths were alive with chatter – walkers like me, dogs splashing in puddles, and the air humming with lark song. I pushed on, past drystone walls and gnarled oaks, reaching a viewpoint where the whole valley unfolded like a green quilt. Pure joy. But halfway down, the clouds rolled in again, proper horizontal rain this time, whipping across the moors. Visibility dropped to nil, and I was proper exposed up there. Heart pounding a bit, I hunkered down behind a wall, munching a soggy flapjack and pondering life's curveballs. Isn't that the Lakes for you? One minute conquering the hills, the next humbled by a squall. It got me reflecting – back home, I'm always rushing, plans etched in stone. Here, the weather's taught me to roll with it, literally. Adapted by dropping lower, following sheep tracks back to the Eden, where the rain eased into mist. Emerged at Elonby 2 like a drowned rat, but chuffed. Stripped off, cranked the heating, and tucked into homemade soup, gazing at the fells turning golden as the storm blew over. By the third day, I'd sussed the pattern: check the sky, embrace the chaos. Another short ramble along the valley paths, dodging showers and chasing sunbeams. Elonby 2 was the perfect base – close enough to these walks that I could pop back for dry layers or a brew. First impressions sealed it: this corner of the Lakes, with its fickle weather and forgiving trails, is my kind of reset. Can't wait to return, map or no map. |
