About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Elonby 2 Premier in the Lake District last autumn – that crisp October weekend when the fells were ablaze with copper and gold, turning every bend into a postcard. I’d set off from Penrith early, fancying myself a proper explorer with a thermos of tea and a playlist of Lakeland folk tunes. But about five miles out, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided my windscreen was its personal launchpad. Thwack! Feathers everywhere, and me pulling over in a flap, convinced I’d just committed countryside roadkill. Turns out the bird was fine – just a feathery protest – but it left me with a smudge and a story, laughing at my city-slicker panic as I wiped it clean with a soggy tissue.

By the time I trundled up the lane to Elonby 2 Premier, the late afternoon sun was dipping low, casting long shadows over the dry stone walls and bathing the stone cottage in that golden glow only autumn delivers. Nestled in a peaceful spot near Penrith, it’s the sort of place that whispers ‘cosy retreat’ from the moment you spot it – a Premier cottage from Snaptrip, all character with its slate roof and flower baskets still clinging on despite the chill. I parked up, crunched over fallen leaves that crackled like bonfire toffee underfoot, and fumbled the key code with numb fingers. Inside, blimey, it was love at first sight. The open-plan living space opened up like a warm hug: a wood-burning stove already laid with kindling (thank heavens, as the mercury was plummeting), squashy sofas piled with tartan blankets, and a kitchen gleaming with all the mod cons – oven, dishwasher, the lot. Perfect for a solo getaway, though it sleeps four if you fancy sharing.

First impressions? Pure seasonal magic. Autumn in the Lakes isn’t just about the views; it’s how the air nips at your cheeks, urging you towards that stove. I dumped my bags and lit the fire pronto – flames dancing up as the scent of applewood filled the room, turning the gloaming into instant hygge. Outside, through the big windows, the garden was a riot of rust: sycamore leaves swirling in a gentle breeze, the fells beyond hazy in the fading light. No hordes of summer hikers here; just me, a robin cheekily pecking at the bird feeder, and the distant low of Herdwick sheep. It felt like the cottage was timed for this exact moment – those Premier touches like the fluffy towels and welcome hamper (local scones, jam, and a bottle of Cumbrian cider) screaming indulgence against the shortening days.

Wandering the garden at dusk was a highlight, the chill wrapping around me like a favourite scarf. I crunched paths lined with browning ferns, spotting fungi popping up like hidden treasures – tiny toadstools in earthy tones that matched the season’s palette. Light humour kicked in when I nearly slipped on a slick of wet leaves, arms windmilling like a cartoon character. “Graceful as a stag in velvet,” I muttered, chuckling to myself. Back inside, I brewed tea in a proper china mug, watching the flames while the windows steamed up. That’s when a bit of gentle reflection hit: in the bustle of life back home, I rarely pause like this. Autumn at Elonby stripped it all back – no distractions, just the crackle of fire and the whisper of wind through the eaves, reminding me why these wild places recharge the soul.

Supper was simple – rummaged up pasta with herbs from the garden (they’d held on through the frosts), eaten by the fire as night fell proper, stars pricking the ink-black sky. The cottage’s quiet nook, mere miles from Penrith’s buzz yet worlds away, amplified the season’s gifts: that mellow fruitfulness, as Keats might say, without the summer crowds or winter’s bite. Elonby 2 Premier didn’t just welcome me; it wrapped the best of Lakeland autumn around me like a cosy quilt. If you’re chasing first-night bliss in this golden time of year, it’s spot on.
