About Lake District
I finally made it to the Lake District after a bit of a faff on the M6 – nothing major, just me spilling half a thermos of tea down my shirt at the services near Penrith, turning me into a soggy human teabag for the last leg. Laughing it off with the family in the car, we trundled into Cockermouth just as the afternoon light was turning those fells golden. Spotting the sign for Coleridge Log Burner, our little home for the next three days, felt like stumbling on a proper hidden gem. Tucked away in a peaceful spot off the main drag, it's the sort of cosy cottage that screams "relax and forget the world."

Pulling up, the first thing that hit me was the rustic charm – this isn't some soulless Airbnb, it's a proper log burner haven with that inviting wooden exterior that makes you want to kick off your wellies right there. We piled out of the car, kids already buzzing, and fumbled with the key safe like Keystone Cops. Inside, blimey, it was even better than the photos. The open-plan living space wrapped around a massive stone hearth, log burner gleaming like it was begging to be lit. Plump sofas, a telly for rainy days (though who needs it with views like these?), and a kitchen kitted out with all the bits – kettle on the go before we'd even unpacked.

First impressions? Pure lodge life bliss. We dumped the bags and cracked open the welcome pack – fresh milk, biscuits, and a cheeky bottle of local ale that had me grinning. The kids claimed the bunk beds upstairs (cue excited whoops and a minor pillow fight), while me and the missus eyed the master with its en-suite and that massive window framing the rolling Cumbrian hills. It's all about those simple pleasures here: no grand adventures on day one, just brewing a cuppa and sinking into the armchairs as the sun dipped low. I lit the log burner – easy as pie, with a basket of kindling and matches right there – and watched the flames dance, filling the room with that smoky, comforting warmth. Chaos erupted when the youngest tried to "help" by chucking on a whole log too soon, sending sparks flying and us all diving for the rug. "Lodge life, eh?" I chuckled, brushing ash off my jeans, feeling that gentle reminder that perfection's overrated.

Stepping out the back door, the garden's a compact haven – picnic bench under a pergola strung with fairy lights, perfect for al fresco brekkies if the weather plays ball. It's private, with hedges shielding you from nosy neighbours (not that there are many), and just a stone's throw from Cockermouth's high street. We wandered down later for chips from a chippy – proper fat, salty ones wrapped in paper – and a mooch past the quaint shops and that iconic Wordsworth House, its gardens spilling over with history. Back at the cottage, night fell soft, stars popping out like someone flicked a switch. Sat by the fire with mugs of hot chocolate (kids' version laced with marshmallows), we played cards till eyelids drooped.

That first evening sparked a bit of self-reflection amid the giggles. Staring into the flames, I thought about how these little breaks recharge the batteries – no emails, no rush, just family and the crackle of logs. In the Lake District's embrace, Coleridge Log Burner nailed it: unpretentious, warm-hearted, and utterly restorative. Can't wait to wake up to whatever tomorrow brings, but honestly, this arrival was magic enough.
