About Lake District
I’ll never forget the drive up to Bluebelle Crossgate Luxury Glamping near Penrith in the Lake District. It was a crisp Friday afternoon in early autumn, and we’d piled the car high with kids’ wellies, a cooler of picnic snacks, and enough board games to survive a month off-grid. My wife Sarah, our two lads aged 8 and 10, and I were buzzing for a proper family getaway – no screens, just fresh air and fancy tent life. The M6 was its usual slog, but as we peeled off towards the A66, the fells started rising like old mates waving hello. Then came the mishap: I misjudged a roundabout in Keswick – about five miles from our spot – and splattered half a Pot Noodle across the dashboard. “Dad’s gourmet lunch special,” groaned the boys, while Sarah fished out wet wipes. Proper start to the holiday, that.

By late afternoon, we trundled down the quiet lane to Bluebelle Crossgate, tucked in a peaceful nook overlooking gentle valleys and those classic Lakeland hills. The glamping site isn’t some massive caravan park; it’s a handful of posh shepherd’s huts and bell tents scattered across meadows, with Penrith’s buzz just a short hop away. Spotting our luxury glamping pod – a sleek wooden beauty called Bluebelle Crossgate – we parked up and tumbled out, jaws dropping. It looked like a fairy-tale hideaway: curved roof, wraparound decking with fairy lights twinkling even in daylight, and a bubbling hot tub steaming invitingly under the oaks. “Is this a tent or a palace?” piped up little Jack, eyes wide as saucers.

We hauled our bags inside, and blimey, it was lush without being pretentious. Cosy double bed piled with fluffy quilts for Sarah and me, bunk beds for the boys (cue immediate wrestling match), and a cracking little kitchenette with a wood-fired stove that promised roasty evenings. The loo and shower were en-suite – proper plumbed-in luxury, none of that portaloo malarkey. First impressions? Pure bliss. We cracked open the welcome hamper – local scones, jam, and a bottle of Cumbrian cider – and sprawled on the decking, soaking in the view. Sheep dotted the fields, a buzzard wheeled overhead, and the air smelled of damp earth and pine. No traffic hum, just birdsong and the distant bleat of lambs.

The boys wasted no time causing lodge-life chaos. While Sarah and I sipped tea, they discovered the hot tub and cannonballed in fully clothed – splashing half the meadow and shrieking like banshees. “It’s warmer than our bath at home!” yelled Tom, as I dashed out with towels, laughing despite the soaking trainers. We rustled up cheese toasties on the stove, the flames crackling merrily, and played Uno till the sun dipped behind Skiddaw. That first evening, as stars popped out over the pod’s skylight, we toasted marshmallows on the fire pit. Simple pleasures, eh? The kind that make you forget emails and deadlines.

Sitting there later, with the family snoring softly, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life’s mad rush had us knackered, but this – muddy wellies by the door, laughter echoing off the hills – reminded me why we do these breaks. In the Lake District’s embrace, just five minutes from Penrith’s cosy pubs, Bluebelle Crossgate felt like our secret reset button. First impressions sealed it: we’d struck glamping gold. Can’t wait to return for more of that relaxed magic.
