I finally made it to The Allensford (Pet) after a bit of a faff on the drive up from Hexham. I'd set off full of beans, playlist blaring some classic Britpop, only for the satnav to chuck a wobbly just outside Corbridge – decided the A68 was a no-go and sent me on a daft detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel past sheep that looked at me like I'd personally offended them. Classic me, forgetting to charge the phone properly, so I arrived with 3% battery and a vague sense of where I was. But there it was, this cosy little pet-friendly cottage tucked away in the Allen Valley, all stone walls and welcoming vibes, just begging for a cuppa and a decompress.

First impressions? Proper Northumberland charm. The place is right on the edge of the countryside, with views over rolling hills that scream "get your boots on." I dumped my bags, gave the dog a fuss (he's the real star of these trips), and cracked open the window to that fresh, peaty air. No faffing about – I was straight out for a hike along the nearby Allen Banks and Staward Gorge trails. It's only a short stroll from the cottage, maybe a mile or so, and it's stunning: ancient woodland clinging to the riverbanks, with the River Allen babbling below like it's got secrets to share. The sun was peeking out as I started, so I thought I'd cracked it – proper blue skies, birds chirping, the works.

But oh, British weather, you cheeky sod. Halfway up the first incline, the clouds rolled in like uninvited guests at a barbecue. One minute I'm striding along in my optimistic shorts (yes, in September, what was I thinking?), next it's spitting rain that turns the paths into a slippery mess. I ducked under a massive oak for shelter, laughing at myself as water dripped off my hood. "Lesson learned," I muttered, pulling on the waterproofs I'd wisely packed. Changed plans on a dime: instead of pushing to the full gorge loop, I looped back along the higher paths, dodging puddles the size of small lakes. The dog's loving it, splashing about like a loony, while I'm picking my way carefully – one wrong step and I'd be arse-over-tit down the bank.

Day two dawned with that deceptive misty glow, so I headed out for the Tyne Valley trails nearby, keeping it local – nothing more than a couple of miles from the cottage door. The weather held for the first hour, letting me soak in the purple heather and those rugged fells that make Northumberland feel like a proper escape. We scrambled up a gentle ridge with killer views back towards the Allen Valley, wind whipping through and making everything feel alive. Then, bam – horizontal rain. Proper biblical stuff. Plans for a longer ramble to the old railway path? Scrapped. I hunkered down by a drystone wall, sharing a soggy biscuit with the dog, and watched the storm rage. It was one of those moments where you just sit with it, innit? Gentle self-reflection time: life's a bit like this weather, innit? You pack for sun but get soaked, and somehow it makes the breakthroughs sweeter. By the time it cleared, the light was golden, turning the wet landscape into something magical – raindrops sparkling like diamonds on the grass.

Back at the cottage by early afternoon, dripping but chuffed, I lit the fire (proper log burner, bliss) and reflected on how these hikes, weather be damned, are what it's all about. The Allensford's spot is perfect for it – no car needed, just lace up and go. That evening, as the clouds parted for a cheeky sunset over the hills, I planned tomorrow's wander: maybe the shorter loop by the river, rain or shine. Northumberland's got that way of keeping you on your toes, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Three days in, and I'm already plotting a return – boots at the ready.
