About Northumberland
I finally made it to Northumberland after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive from the A1, my little hatchback groaning under the weight of two suitcases, a cool box stuffed with Northumberland cheese and pork pies, and our daft spaniel, Monty, who was already shedding fur like confetti at a wedding. It was a three-day jaunt to the Superior 2 Bed (Pet) near Morpeth, and I'd been buzzing about it for weeks—proper countryside escape, pet-friendly, the works. But typical me, I took a wrong turn just off the main road, ending up in some narrow lane that Google Maps swore was a shortcut but was basically a sheep's private runway. Cue the mishap: I clipped a drystone wall with my wing mirror, nothing major, just a cheeky scrape that had me muttering "bollocks" while Monty barked his head off, thinking it was playtime. Fifteen minutes later, heart still thumping, I pulled up to the cottage, gravel crunching under the tyres like a welcoming applause.

First impressions? Blimey, what a belter. The place is tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Morpeth, surrounded by rolling fields that stretch out like a green duvet, with the Cheviot Hills teasing in the distance. It's one of those superior self-catering spots that looks dead posh without trying too hard—stone-built exterior with a slate roof, flower baskets dripping with lobelia and petunias, and a sturdy wooden door that swung open to reveal a world of cosiness. I fumbled the key safe code (post-mishap hands shaking, innit?), and stepped inside, Monty hot on my heels, tail wagging like a metronome on speed.

The living room hit me first—proper spacious, with plush sofas in soft greys that screamed "flop down and forget the world." A wood-burning stove sat there like an old mate, ready for a fire later, and the telly was a massive smart one, perfect for catching Strictly if the weather turned. But the views! Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the garden, which rolled out to a private patio with a table and chairs begging for a cuppa al fresco. Monty immediately claimed it as his throne, sniffing every blade of grass like he'd discovered Narnia. I chuckled to myself—after that daft drive, this felt like the universe handing me a win.

Kitchen next, and crikey, it was a dream for a rubbish cook like me. Granite worktops gleaming, a huge American-style fridge-freezer stocked with the basics (milk, bread, even some local butter), and an oven that looked like it could roast a full Northumberland beef joint. I unpacked my cool box, sticking the pies in, and brewed a builder's tea while taking it all in. The attention to detail was spot on—pet bowls by the back door, towels folded like hotel posh, and a welcome pack with tea, coffee, and biscuits. Made me feel proper looked-after.

Up the creaky oak stairs (love that sound, reminds me of Nan's old place), the two bedrooms were cracking. The master had a king-sized bed piled high with duck-down duvet and pillows so fluffy I wanted to dive in fully clothed. Crisp white sheets, wardrobe space for days, and an en-suite with a rain shower that promised to wash away any lingering road rage. The second room was twin beds, equally snazzy, ideal for mates or kids. Both overlooked the garden, with birdsong filtering in—robins and blackbirds having a right old chinwag.

Bathroom down the hall was all fluffy robes and Molton Brown bits, but it was the garden that sealed it. Fully enclosed for Monty, with a lawn begging for a game of fetch, and that patio set for barbecues. I sat there with my tea, sun dipping low, reflecting on how I'd nearly cocked up the whole trip with my sat-nav idiocy. But honestly? Arriving here, mishap and all, was the perfect chaotic start to what felt like home already. Northumberland's magic had me hooked from minute one—this cottage is pure class, pet or no pet. Can't wait for day two.
