About Starwood.
The delightful village of Felton lies in rural Northumberland, between Morpeth and Alnwick. It offers a shop with post office, coffee shop, pub and restaurant, and is just 10 miles from Alnwick Castle and its famous gardens—Europe's largest cascading water feature, enormous treehouse, rose garden and ornamental walled garden. The castle featured as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. Alnwick has shops, pubs and eateries, plus nearby golden beaches, castles and boat trips to the Farne Islands. Perfect for exploring Northumberland's stunning Heritage Coast. Nearby attractions.
About Northumberland
By the time we trundled down the quiet lanes towards Starwood, just a stone’s throw from Morpeth, the sun was peeking through like it knew we needed cheering up. Northumberland’s got that magic, doesn’t it? Rolling fields giving way to those rugged hills, sheep dotted about like fluffy punctuation marks. Starwood itself is tucked away in a peaceful spot, a cosy timber lodge that screams “relaxed family escape.” We parked up on the gravel drive – crunch, crunch – and unloaded amid much chaos: bags tumbling, the dog lead tangled round the youngest’s buggy, and my husband wrestling the cool box like it was a rogue alligator. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The lodge is one of those wooden beauties with a pitched roof and big windows that let the countryside flood in. Step inside, and it’s all warm wood panelling, squishy sofas begging for a collapse, and a kitchen that’s compact but kitted out proper – think Belfast sink, Aga vibes (well, electric cooker, but you get me), and enough worktop for my disastrous attempts at packed lunches. We arrived mid-afternoon, bags dumped in the two snug bedrooms – ours with a king-size bed that looked like it could swallow you whole, and the kids’ twin setup complete with bunk beds for maximum giggling potential. The real star, though, was that wood-burning stove in the lounge. I lit it up straight away (after a frantic rummage for firelighters in the welcome pack), and within minutes the place was toasty, flames dancing like we’d never left civilisation. Outside, the decking wrapped round with views over open fields – no nosy neighbours, just birdsong and the odd tractor rumbling by. We cracked open a flask of tea from the car, plonked on the benches, and just... breathed. After the drive’s palaver, it felt like sinking into a hot bath. First evening was pure lodge life bliss with a side of family mayhem. The kids bolted out to explore the garden patch – it’s got that wild, untamed edge with herbs in pots and a little patio heater for chillier nights. I pottered in the kitchen, cobbling together beans on toast (gourmet, obviously), while hubby fiddled with the telly – Freeview sorted, Sky box optional, but who needs it with those views? Dinner round the oak table turned into a laughter fest when the youngest smeared jam everywhere, turning the cloth into abstract art. We wiped up, chucked logs on the fire, and played Uno till bedtime, the lodge glowing like a lantern in the twilight. Sitting there later, mug of Horlicks in hand, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life’s mad rush – work emails, school runs – it all melted away. Here at Starwood, it’s the simple stuff that hits home: the creak of the floorboards, rain pattering on the roof, that first lungful of fresh Northumbrian air. We’d only just arrived, but already I was plotting a return. Three days of this? Can’t come soon enough. If you’re after a chilled family break where chaos meets calm, this is your spot. Starwood’s got me hooked. |
