About Northumberland
I finally made it to Portland (Pet) after a bit of a faff on the drive up from Hexham. I'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting some classic Britpop, only for the satnav to chuck a wobbly just outside town – directing me down a narrow farm track that had me convinced I'd end up in a field with the sheep laughing at my shiny hire car. A quick U-turn, a muttered curse, and 20 minutes later, I was trundling up the lane to this gem of a pet-friendly lodge, tucked away in the Northumberland countryside. The sun was dipping low, casting that golden glow over the rolling hills, and I thought, "Right, this is it – time to do bugger all for three days."

Pulling up to Portland (Pet), I was smitten straight away. It's one of those proper cosy numbers – a detached lodge with a pitched roof, whitewashed walls, and a veranda that screams "sit here with a brew." The owner had left the key in the door (classic countryside trust), and as I stepped inside, the warmth hit me like a hug. Exposed beams, a wood-burning stove already stocked with kindling, and those squishy sofas that make you sink in and never want to leave. The kitchen was kitted out nicely too – Aga humming away, fresh milk in the fridge, and a welcome pack with local shortbread that I demolished before unpacking. My dog, Monty, went mental sniffing every corner, tail wagging like a metronome on overdrive. "This is your holiday too, lad," I chuckled, watching him claim the rug by the fire as his throne.

First impressions? Pure bliss. After dumping my bags, I cracked open a window, letting in the fresh Northumberland air – that crisp, peaty scent that makes city lungs perk up. The garden was the real star: enclosed and private, with a lawn perfect for Monty's zoomies, flowerbeds bursting with late-summer lavender and wild roses, and a couple of bird feeders drawing in cheeky robins and tits. I plonked myself on the patio chair with a cuppa and a dog-eared paperback I'd brought – some light crime thriller – and just... watched. Clouds scudding over the fells, bees buzzing lazily. No rush, no agenda. That's the joy of a place like this: it's designed for faffing about, not ticking boxes.

Day one proper kicked off with the art of doing precisely nowt. Breakfast was leisurely – porridge on the go with Northumberland honey I'd spotted in the welcome pack – eaten at the garden table while Monty chased shadows. Then it was sofa city: feet up, stove crackling (I lit it for the crackle more than the heat), lost in my book till lunchtime. Proper self-indulgent, that – no emails pinging, no mates texting "fancy a pint?" Just me, Monty snoring softly, and the tick of the clock reminding me time's not the enemy here.

Venturing out? Only as far as a gentle potter around the immediate lanes – maybe a mile's amble to spot some Herdwick sheep grazing nearby or pick blackberries for a crumble later. Nothing strenuous; it's all about that slow Northumberland rhythm. Back at the lodge, I'd brew tea, flick through a magazine, or just gaze out at the garden as dusk fell, the sky turning that mad pinky-purple. One evening, I caught myself staring into space, mug gone cold, and had a proper moment: when did life get so frantic? Here, with the quiet pressing in like a comfy blanket, I realised slowing down isn't lazy – it's bloody essential. Monty looked up, gave me a nudge, and we both settled back in.

By the end of those first impressions, I was hooked. Portland (Pet) isn't about grand adventures; it's the joy of very little – a cosy nook where the world shrinks to garden views, good reads, and the odd dog walk. If you're after recharging without the schlep, this is your spot. Can't wait to go back and do even less.
