About Northumberland
About five miles out, disaster struck – or what passed for it in our holiday chaos. I’d packed the boot like a Tetris pro, but as we hit a sneaky pothole (cheers, council), the lid popped open, and out tumbled my wife’s prized picnic hamper. Cheese, crackers, and a bottle of elderflower fizz went rolling down the verge like escaped convicts. “Pull over, you numpty!” she yelped, half-laughing, half-furious. We scrambled out in the rain, me on my knees retrieving soggy oatcakes while she salvaged the fizz – miraculously intact. A passing farmer in a flat cap slowed his tractor, gave us a wry grin and a thumbs-up. “First time in these parts?” he shouted. Cheeky sod. Fifteen minutes later, we were back on track, hamper reassembled (minus a few casualties), and both of us giggling like kids. Typical us – turning a five-minute detour into a full-blown adventure. By the time we trundled up the lane to Pinecone Lodge No 9, the sun was peeking through the clouds, casting that golden Northumberland glow over everything. The place is a gem: a smart wooden lodge in a little cluster, nestled in tranquil woodland just outside Morpeth. We parked on the gravel drive – no more boot mishaps, thank God – and stepped out to the sound of birdsong and rustling leaves. The key awaited in the lockbox, as promised, and with a click, we were in. Blimey, what a first impression. It’s all open-plan loveliness: a lounge with plush sofas begging for a collapse, a wood-burning stove (unlit, but screaming potential for later), and a kitchen that’s kitted out better than ours at home. Granite worktops, shiny appliances, and a massive fridge – perfect for stashing that rescued fizz. We dumped the bags and had a proper mooch. The master bedroom? King-sized bed piled high with duck-down duvets, en-suite with a rainfall shower that looked like it could wash away a week’s worth of city grime. The twin room for the kids (well, our mates’ offspring tagging along) was equally spot-on, with crisp linens and views straight into the trees. Out the French doors, a private deck wrapped around, complete with outdoor furniture and a charcoal BBQ. Sat there with a cuppa, feet up, watching squirrels dart about – it was pure bliss. The air smelled of pine and earth, and in the distance, you could hear the faint hum of the A1, but it felt a million miles away. No traffic noise here, just peace. That picnic mishap? It melted away as we cracked open the fizz on the deck, toasting our chaotic arrival. Northumberland does that to you – turns a soggy start into something special. I caught myself reflecting, glass in hand, on how we rush about life back home, always chasing the next thing. Here, in Pinecone Lodge No 9, it’s like the world slows down. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Can’t wait to see what the next few days bring, but honestly, this spot’s already won us over. |
