I’ll never forget the drive up to that pet-friendly lodge with the hot tub near the Northumberland coast – a proper three-day jaunt from the Midlands, with our daft Labrador, Rufus, sprawled across the back seat like he owned the car. We’d set off full of beans, sandwiches packed, but about halfway there, just past the A1 services, I managed to spill an entire thermos of tea all over my lap. Proper clown shoes moment – steaming wet trousers and Rufus giving me that pitying side-eye as if to say, “You’re the human here, sort it out.” Laughing it off, we pressed on, arriving at the lodge near Morpeth just as the sun dipped low over the fields, painting everything in that golden Northumberland glow.

Pulling up to the place felt like stumbling into a secret hideaway. Tucked off a quiet lane, it was this cosy wooden lodge with a cheeky hot tub bubbling away on the deck, surrounded by high hedges that screamed privacy. Rufus bounded out first, tail wagging like a windscreen wiper on full pelt, sniffing every blade of grass. First impressions? Spot on. The owners had left a welcome basket with local fudge and a note saying, “Make yourselves at home – dogs welcome!” We dumped our bags and cracked open a beer, but it was the locals who turned our arrival into pure gold.

No sooner had we settled than old Geoff from the neighbouring farm popped over on his quad bike, a proper character straight out of a Sunday night telly drama. She pulled up in her little red van, hair like a bird’s nest from the wind, and hopped out with a carrier bag of “essentials” from the local shop. “Thought you lot might need milk and barm cakes,” she said, thrusting them at us. “Heard from Geoff you’re down from the smoke – proper soft southerners, eh?” We laughed, and she launched into her life story: 30 years cycling these lanes, dodging tractors and the odd fox. “One time, a seal washed up on the beach five minutes away – fat thing, barking like it owned the place!” Her humour was infectious, all dry wit and no-nonsense charm, making us feel like old mates already. Rufus nicked a bit of her biscuit, and she just winked – “Cheeky pup, just like my collie back home.”

As the evening drew in, we fired up the hot tub, steam rising into the crisp air, and reflected on these instant connections. In the rush of everyday life back home, I rarely chat to strangers beyond a nod at the till, but here, these quirky locals – Geoff with his farmyard wisdom, Maureen with her van-load of gossip – made the lodge feel less like a holiday let and more like a proper home from home. It hit me gently then, bubbles churning around me: sometimes the best first impressions aren’t the plush digs or the scenic views, but the folk who make you laugh till your sides ache. Northumberland’s got that magic – and we’d only just arrived.
