About Northumberland
I’ll never forget the drive up to Number 43 Burnside Lodge in Northumberland – a proper comedy of errors from the off. We’d piled into the car in Morpeth, me, the wife, and our two lads, buzzing for a three-day family escape. Sat nav said it was a doddle, just a few miles out towards the countryside, but no, I managed to take a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that looked like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Cue the wife sighing, “You’ve done it again, haven’t you?” and the boys in the back chanting “Lost! Lost!” like it was a football terrace. Fifteen minutes of reversing past bemused sheep later, we spotted the sign for Burnside Lodge – a cluster of cosy little chalets tucked into woodland, right by a babbling stream. Mishap forgotten, we were grinning like idiots.

Pulling up to Number 43, it was love at first sight. This isn’t some flashy holiday let; it’s a proper lodge, all timber and charm, with a pitched roof and a veranda that screamed “put your feet up.” We’d booked it for that relaxed family vibe – no grand plans, just simple pleasures amid Northumberland’s gentle hills. The key was in a handy lockbox, and as I fumbled it open (third time lucky), the door swung into a surprisingly roomy open-plan space. Compact kitchen to the right, with everything you’d need for a fry-up or pasta night – toaster, kettle, even a proper hob for the wife’s legendary spag bol. Lounge area straight ahead, two squishy sofas facing a telly and a wood burner that hadn’t been lit yet but promised cosy evenings. The boys bolted upstairs to claim the twin beds, while we bagged the double with its en-suite – nothing fancy, but spotless and snug, with fluffy towels that made you feel properly pampered.

First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. We dumped the bags and headed out to explore the site – it’s only a stone’s throw from Morpeth, but feels worlds away. The lodges are dotted around a shared garden with a play area; the lads were straight on the swings, whooping as they swung over the grass. I wandered down to the stream – clear as gin, with little cascades perfect for skimming stones. Sat on a bench there, mug of tea in hand (milk from the fridge, sorted), and thought, “This is it, isn’t it? Proper lodge life.” There’s a gentle chaos to it all – the faint hum of other families nearby, kids splashing in paddling pools, barbecues firing up as the sun dipped. We nipped back for a brew, and the veranda became our HQ: wooden table, chairs that creaked just right, and views of trees rustling in the breeze. The boys turned it into a den with blankets, while I pretended to read the paper but mostly watched woodpeckers flit about.

That first afternoon set the tone – light-hearted mayhem wrapped in calm. We rustled up cheese toasties in the kitchen (burner heated up a treat), then played cards on the lounge rug till the light faded. One funny moment: the youngest tipped a full crisp packet everywhere, and we spent ten minutes hoovering with the handheld – lodge life chaos at its finest, laughing all the while. As evening rolled in, firing up the wood burner felt like a ritual; flames crackling, shadows dancing on the walls. Sat there with the family, I had a quiet moment of reflection – how often do we rush about? Here, in this little Northumberland haven, time slowed. No signals stressing us out, just the simple joy of being together, the stream’s murmur outside like a lullaby.

Number 43 Burnside Lodge nailed those first impressions – welcoming, whimsical, and wonderfully low-key. If you’re after a family break that’s all about the little things, this is your spot. We hadn’t even unpacked properly, and already it felt like home.
