About Northumberland
The lodge itself was an absolute gem, tucked away in a quiet corner of Northumberland near Matfen Hall. From the moment I stepped through the door, it felt like a hug from an old mate. Cosy as anything, with low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove already stocked with kindling, and those plush sofas that practically begged you to sink into them. The kitchen was kitted out properly—proper mugs for tea, a fridge humming away with fresh milk—and the bedroom upstairs had the fluffiest duvet I've seen in ages. First impressions? Pure bliss. No grand hotel lobby, just this intimate little haven that screamed "stay put and chill." Unpacking took about five minutes (mainly because I'd only brought a rucksack), and then I was straight out to the garden. It was one of those rare Northumberland afternoons where the sun actually peeked through the clouds, casting a soft glow over the lawns and flowerbeds. I plonked myself in a lounger with a cuppa and a dog-eared copy of some crime novel I'd been meaning to crack open for months. Birds were chirping, a light breeze rustling the leaves—proper peaceful. I must've sat there for hours, barely moving except to top up my tea. The joy of doing bugger all, honestly. Who needs an itinerary when you've got this? As the sun dipped lower, I fancied a gentle wander—just a short stroll down the lane to stretch the legs. Matfen's the sort of place where you can amble along hedgerows without seeing a soul, past stone cottages and the odd sheep eyeing you suspiciously. It's quintessential Northumberland: rolling fields, drystone walls, that fresh country air that clears your head. I popped into the local farm shop not five minutes away—picked up some Northumberland cheese, a loaf of crusty bread, and a bottle of local ale. Nothing fancy, but it felt like a proper treat. Back at the lodge, I lit the stove (managing not to set off the smoke alarm, for once), and settled in for a lazy evening. Cheese on toast, feet up, book in lap. The flames crackled away, and outside, the garden faded into twilight. Blissful. That first evening brought on a bit of gentle reflection as I stared into the fire. Life back home's always go-go-go—deadlines, emails, the lot. Here, in this cosy nook, I realised how knackered I'd been without clocking it. No plans, no pressures, just me and the quiet. It's funny how a simple lodge in Matfen can make you see that doing very little is exactly what you need sometimes. I chuckled thinking about that satnav detour; if I'd rushed it, I might've missed this unhurried magic. Day two dawned misty, but I wasn't fussed. More garden lounging with coffee, watching dew sparkle on the grass. A slow meander to the nearby hall grounds—public paths winding through ancient trees, perfect for a mooch without any effort. Back for lunch (leftover cheese, obviously), then an afternoon lost in my book on the sofa. The lodge's garden felt like my private domain—humming bees, comfy benches, that endless sky. Northumberland does slow living like no other. By day three, I was properly hooked on the rhythm: wake late, potter in the garden, read till my eyes drooped, maybe a short local explore if the mood took me. First impressions don't get much better—this Matfen lodge nailed the art of switching off. If you're after joy in the everyday nothing-much, it's spot on. I left feeling recharged, already plotting a return. |
