About Northumberland
Pulling up to the lodge around teatime felt like arriving at a secret hideaway. Tucked just outside Haltwhistle—practically in the shadow of Hadrian's Wall, though we hadn't ventured that far yet—the place is a proper gem. Wood cladding, big windows overlooking a wild-ish garden, and there it was: the hot tub bubbling away on the deck like it was waiting to hug us. We piled out of the car, bags tumbling everywhere, the kids—aged 8 and 10—racing ahead yelling "Hot tub! Hot tub!" while I wrestled with the wonky gate that nearly took my finger off. Classic lodge life chaos, innit? First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Spacious inside, with a telly bigger than our lounge one back home, squishy sofas, and a kitchen that screamed "cook a massive fry-up tomorrow." We dumped the bags and cracked open the welcome pack—local shortbread, a bottle of Northumberland ale, and a cheeky note from the owners about nearby walks. No faffing about; straight into holiday mode. The missus and I nipped out to the Co-op in Haltwhistle for essentials—milk, bread, a cheeky bottle of fizz—while the kids claimed the bunk beds upstairs. That five-minute drive was a treat: past stone cottages, the Tyne Valley stretching out, and not a soul in sight. Back at the lodge, we fired up the hot tub as the sun dipped behind the hills. First dip was pure bliss—jets pounding my knackered back from the drive, steam rising, kids splashing like loons until one of them cannonballed and drenched me proper. "Oi, you little terror!" I spluttered, but we were all howling. Simple pleasures, eh? That water was hotter than a vindaloo, turning our pale southern skin lobster-red in minutes. As the stars popped out—proper dark skies here, no light pollution bollocks—we grilled sausages on the patio BBQ, the smoky smell mingling with pine from the woods nearby. First impressions extended to the peace: just birdsong, the odd distant tractor, and our family's giggles echoing off the trees. No neighbours peering over fences, just us in our bubble. Sat there with a beer, watching the kids chase fireflies (or were they midges? Who cares), I had a quiet moment of self-reflection. Life's mad rush—work emails, school runs—feels miles away already. Here, in this cosy lodge, it's like we've hit pause. Why do we wait so long between these breaks? The chaos of spilled sauce and soggy socks is the best bit, reminding me family's not perfect, but it's ours. By bedtime, pyjamas on, Monopoly board out (which the kids cheated at, naturally), the lodge wrapped us up like a warm blanket. First night in, and we're already plotting lazy mornings with crumpets and more tub time. Northumberland's got us hooked—can't wait to soak it all in over the next couple of days. If you're after a relaxed family escape with a side of hot tub heaven, this is the spot. Proper lush. |
