Built almost a thousand years ago to guard a crossing of the River Aln, Alnwick Castle and Gardens is the seat of the Duke of Northumberland and was featured as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films. Like Harry, you too can take your first flying lesson in the grounds of this spectacular castle, learning from the estate’s eccentric wizarding professors.

About Northumberland
I finally made it to Hillside View after what felt like the scenic route from Newcastle, though my sat-nav had other ideas. About five miles out from Morpeth, it decided to throw a wobbly and directed me down a narrow farm track that was more mud than tarmac. I ended up with a splattering of Northumberland clay on the tyres and a mild panic about getting stuck – classic me, turning a 45-minute drive into an unplanned off-road adventure. But honestly, it was the perfect comedy opener to what turned out to be the laziest three days of pure bliss.

Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon, I was smitten straight away. Nestled in a quiet spot just outside Morpeth, Hillside View lives up to its name with these sweeping views over rolling fields and distant hills – the kind that make you exhale and think, "Yep, this is why I needed a break." It's one of those cosy timber lodges that's all about comfort without the fuss: wooden cladding glowing in the late sun, a wraparound deck that begs for a cuppa, and a garden that's basically a wildflower haven with a couple of bird feeders already buzzing with activity. I hauled my bag inside, kicked off my boots, and flopped onto the squishy sofa, feeling the tension from work melt away like butter on a hot scone.

First impressions? Heaven for a do-nothing holiday. The open-plan living space is spot-on for solo chilling – wood-burner ready to roar (though the sun was out, so no need yet), a telly for the odd episode of something daft, and a kitchen stocked with all the basics. I cracked open a tin of beans for a lazy tea, then wandered out to the garden as the light faded. Sat there with a book – some mindless crime novel I'd been saving – watching rabbits hop about and the sky turn that brilliant pinky-orange Northumberland does so well. No itinerary, no rush. Just me, a thermos of tea, and the gentle hum of countryside quiet. It's funny how doing bugger all feels so productive when you're knackered.

The next morning, I woke to birdsong and decided exploration could wait till I'd had a proper brekkie. Bacon butty on the deck, coffee steaming, and I just... stayed there. The garden's a proper suntrap, with comfy loungers half-hidden by lavender bushes. I spent hours flicking through pages, dozing off now and then, only stirring for a wander down the lane to the nearby woodland edge. It's barely a mile from the lodge, that little pocket of ancient trees where you can amble slowly, breathing in the piney air, spotting the odd squirrel. No hikes for this lad – just a gentle potter, picking up conkers like a daft kid, then back for lunch. Self-reflection moment: staring at those trees, I realised how wired I'd been lately, always chasing the next thing. Here, time stretched out lazy-like, reminding me that slowing down isn't slacking off; it's recharging the soul.

Day three followed the same glorious pattern – a meander to the quiet lanes around Morpeth for fresh air and maybe a pasty from the local shop, but mostly it was garden lounging, reading till my eyes blurred, and savouring the peace. Hillside View isn't about grand adventures; it's a hug from Northumberland, coaxing you to sit still and let the world spin without you. By checkout, I was plotting my return, already craving that first-impression magic all over again. If you're after proper rest, this is your spot – mishaps and all.
