About Northumberland
Stepping inside Hazelwood was like being wrapped in a warm hug from an old mate. It's this gorgeous, modern lodge tucked away in a peaceful spot, all wood-beamed ceilings and plush sofas, with a kitchen that screamed "get cooking, lad." First impressions? Spot on for a solo three-day jaunt. The views out the floor-to-ceiling windows straight onto rolling fields had me grinning like a fool—proper Northumberland postcard stuff, without a hint of tourist tat. But let's be real, the star of the show was the food scene right from the off. I'd timed my arrival for late afternoon, so after dumping my bags, I cracked open those sausages and got stuck into my first "meal" of the trip: a hasty pan-fry with some onions I'd nabbed from the Hexham market that morning. The lodge's kitchen is kitted out brilliantly—sharp knives, a cracking oven, and even a larder stocked with basics like tea towels and olive oil. My sausages came out a bit charred on one side (note to self: lower the hob next time), but slathered in mustard and paired with crusty bread from the local bakery, it was pure bliss. Sat there at the breakfast bar, munching away with a cuppa, I felt that gentle pang of reflection—when was the last time I'd properly slowed down for a meal like this, no phone buzzing, just me and the quiet? That first evening, I wandered out for a proper pub crawl within spitting distance—Hazelwood's brilliantly placed for it. First stop was The County Hotel in Hexham, just a short stroll away, where the barman poured me a pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord that was so fresh it practically sparkled. I went for their homemade steak pie, all flaky pastry and tender beef in rich gravy, with a side of mushy peas that took me right back to me nan's kitchen. It was heaving with locals chatting about the footie, and I couldn't help but chuckle at myself, the southerner trying to blend in with my dodgy accent. Back at the lodge, stuffed and merry, I attempted a midnight snack: cracking open a tin of smoked kippers (market find) and grilling them up with butter and black pepper. The aroma filled the place—smoky, salty heaven—but I overdid the grill and set off the smoke alarm for a solid two minutes. Laughing my head off, I fanned it out with a tea towel, thinking how these little kitchen disasters are what make a holiday memorable. Next morning—still smack in those golden first impressions—I hit the Hexham Market bright and early. It's a proper gem, just minutes away, with stalls groaning under Northumberland bounty: fat pork pies, wheels of Stilton-esque cheese, and piles of seasonal veg like earthy carrots and spring greens. I loaded up on bacon from a smokery stall, some scones with clotted cream, and a flask of builder's tea. Back at Hazelwood, breakfast was a triumph: bacon butty on fresh baps, fried eggs from local free-rangers (okay, shop-bought but felt authentic), and a dollop of that market chutney. Sat on the decking with the sun peeking through, devouring it all, I reflected on how daft it is that we rush through meals back home—this lodge had me savouring every bite. Lunch was a cheeky attempt at Northumberland pan haggerty—thin-sliced spuds, onions, and cheese layered and baked in the lodge's oven. Pulled it off decently, if a bit gooey, washed down with a Hexham Brewery ale from the offie round the corner. Then it was The Heart of Northumberland pub for elevenses pie—lamb and mint, divine—and back for an evening of charcuterie from market meats, crusty loaves, and a cheeky bottle of red. Those first 24 hours at Hazelwood? A feast for the senses, mishaps and all, leaving me proper content and already plotting the next grazing session. |
