About Northumberland
I finally made it to Evergreen Lodge near Morpeth after a bit of a faff on the drive up from Newcastle. I'd nipped off the A1 too early, thanks to my sat-nav deciding to throw a wobbly and send me down a narrow lane that was more suited to a tractor than my little hatchback. Mud splattered the sides, and I arrived looking like I'd been mud-wrestling, but hey, it was a proper Northumberland welcome—nothing like a spot of chaos to get the holiday vibes going.

Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Morpeth, it's one of those cosy wooden retreats that screams "get back to nature." The decking wrapped around it like a hug, with a hot tub bubbling away invitingly (though I eyed it warily, given the grey skies overhead). Inside, it was all warm wood panelling, a cracking little kitchen, and a telly bigger than my flat's one back home. I dumped my bags, brewed a cuppa, and stepped out to take in the first impressions—rolling fields stretching out, birds cheeping, and that fresh country air that hits you right in the lungs.

Keen to stretch my legs after the drive, I laced up my boots for a wander around the nearby woodland paths. Northumberland's got some belting walks on its doorstep, and Evergreen's location is spot-on for them—miles of trails winding through ancient forests and along babbling brooks, all within a stone's throw. The first hike was a gentle loop through the trees, maybe two miles, dodging puddles from overnight rain. The weather was doing its classic British two-step: one minute sun peeking through, birdsong filling the air, the next a mizzle starting that had me zipping up my waterproof. I chuckled to myself, thinking how I'd packed for a heatwave based on the forecast, only to find my brolly was still buried in the boot.

By evening, the skies cleared just enough for a longer stroll at dusk. I followed a path skirting the edge of a nearby nature reserve—think fern-filled glades and the odd curious sheep peering over drystone walls. The light was magic, golden and low, turning everything misty and ethereal. But wouldn't you know it, halfway round, the heavens opened proper. Fat raindrops hammered down, turning the trail into a slip 'n' slide. I sheltered under a massive oak, hood up, laughing at how daft I looked like a drowned rat. British weather, eh? It's like it has a personal vendetta against your plans. Instead of a leisurely pub stop I'd eyed up in Morpeth village—a quaint spot with roaring fires and real ales—I squelched back to the lodge, peeled off my sopping layers, and fired up the log burner.

That first night, cosy in my pyjamas with a steaming bowl of pasta, I reflected on it all. Sat there watching the rain lash the windows, I realised how these unplanned moments are the real gold of a trip like this. No grand itinerary, just me, the walks, and whatever the weather threw at me. It's a gentle nudge that life's better when you don't fight the elements—lean into them, get a bit soggy, and appreciate the lodge's glow all the more. Day one at Evergreen Lodge, and I was already hooked on its simple magic. Can't wait to see what the next walks bring, rain or shine.
