About Northumberland
I finally made it to Cupola Lodge near Hexham after a bit of a faff on the drive up from the south. Picture this: I'd packed the car with enough cheese, biscuits, and a bottle of decent red for the three days ahead, dreaming of lazy Northumberland evenings. But about 20 miles out, I managed to splatter half a pasty across the windscreen when I tried to juggle a hasty lunch at a services. Absolute clown shoes – crumbs everywhere, and me swearing like a trooper while scraping it off with a Costa cup. Still, by late afternoon, I was trundling down those quiet lanes towards the lodge, the fells rolling out like a proper postcard.

Pulling up to Cupola Lodge was pure magic, right off the bat. It's this cosy stone cottage tucked into the hillside, just a stone's throw from Hexham's buzz but feeling miles from anywhere. I unloaded my bags – mostly groceries from that quick stop in town – and stepped inside. The kitchen hit me first: compact, gleaming, with a proper Aga that promised all sorts of homely mischief. First impressions? Heaven for a food-obsessed sort like me. I'd already clocked the local market in Hexham on the way in, nabbing fresh Northumberland bacon, a wedge of crumbly Wensleydale, and some plump tomatoes that smelled like summer. No chain supermarkets here; it was all proper local stuff from the market stalls.

Day one kicked off with settling in over a brew. I fired up the kettle, sliced that bacon thick, and attempted my first fry-up on the Aga. Disaster narrowly averted – I nearly smoked out the place forgetting to adjust the heat, but the rashers came out crispy as you like, piled on toast with a fried egg wobbling on top. Sat at the little window table overlooking the garden, munching away, I thought, blimey, this is the life. No rush, just the quiet hum of the countryside and birds chirping. Fuelled up, I wandered the short stroll into Hexham for more provisions. The market was still humming – stalls groaning under pies, local honey, and those fat sausages from the butcher who swore they were the best in the county.

Evening called for the pub, naturally. The heart of any Northumberland stay, innit? Cupola's close enough to a couple of cracking locals without needing the car. I plumped for the first one I found, a proper free house with beams low enough to duck and a fire roaring. Pints of Timmy Taylor's Landlord flowed, golden and bitter just right, while I tucked into a steak and ale pie that was all flaky pastry and tender beef stewed in Northumberland ale. Shared a table with a couple of locals who ribbed me gently about my southern accent and insisted I try the black pudding next time. Laughed till my sides hurt, then staggered back to the lodge under starry skies, the cool air sharpening my appetite again.

Back home – well, Cupola felt like home already – I cracked open that red wine and had a bash at supper. Improvised a pasta with market chorizo, garlic from the veg stall, and a handful of wild-ish herbs I'd spotted in the garden. Not chef material, mind – it was a tad oily, and I overcooked the pasta while faffing with the playlist – but washed down with the wine, it hit the spot. Sat there in the lamplight, plate balanced on my knee, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life's mad rush back home, always chasing the next deadline, and here I was, three days in with nothing but good grub and good vibes. Why don't I do this more often? Gentle nudge to self: slow down, eat better, live a bit.

Next morning, breakfast was elevenses by the window: market scones, clotted cream, and strawberry jam that tasted like it was picked that day. First impressions don't fade; they just get tastier. Cupola Lodge had me hooked from the off – all about the food, the pubs, and those simple cooking wins that make a holiday sing. Can't wait to go back for seconds.
