About Northumberland
Pulling into the lodge’s drive around teatime, I was knackered but buzzing. Clearwater Lodge sits tucked away in that lush Northumberland countryside, all stone walls and whispering woods, just a stone’s throw from the River Wansbeck. First impressions? Cosy as a hug from your nan – a proper dog-friendly cottage with a wood burner begging to be lit and views that make you go “blimey.” But it was the people who turned arrival into an event. No sooner had I lugged my bags in than old Geoff from next door popped over, leaning on his fence with a fag dangling and a grin wider than the Cheviots. “New ‘ere, are ya?” he bellowed, before launching into how he’d fished the Wansbeck since Eisenhower was in short trousers. Geoff’s a retired miner, face like weathered oak, and within five minutes he’d roped me into a yarn about the time he hooked a salmon the size of a lorry tyre. “But don’t you go tryin’ it yerself, lad – them otters’ll have your rod off ya!” I chuckled, picturing him wrestling wildlife, and he winked, promising to show me his secret spot at dawn. Proper character, Geoff – the sort who’d fix your puncture with a bit of baler twine and a story. As I unpacked, a knock at the door brought Mrs. Patel from the nearby farm shop, dropping off fresh scones “for the weary traveller.” She’s second-gen Northumberland, with an accent that’s pure Geordie laced with Bollywood spice. “Jam first or cream? Don’t get me started – it’s sacrilege either way round here!” We ended up nattering on the doorstep about her goats – “cheeky buggers, they’ve learned to open the gate” – and how the lodge used to belong to a posh artist who painted nothing but sheep. Her laugh was infectious, and before I knew it, I’d promised to pop in for her famous curry the next day. First impressions of the place deepened with her: welcoming, warm, and full of that unpretentious Northumbrian graft. Evening brought the pub crowd from the Druridge Bay Inn down the lane – well, two of them anyway. Big Tam, the barman with arms like hams, ambled over while I grabbed a pint of local ale. “Yer at Clearwater, eh? Best spot for listenin’ to the owls hollerin’.” He reckoned the lodge was haunted by a friendly ghost – “just a chill down yer neck, nowt to fret over” – and regaled me with tales of the 1970s flood when the Wansbeck turned the village into a paddling pool. His mate, wee Sheila with her peroxide bob and sharper wit, chipped in: “Tam’s ghost is just his missus after one too many!” We howled over crisps and crisps, her teasing him mercilessly about his failed fishing exploits. “Caught nowt but a cold last summer!” Quirky doesn’t cover it – they’re the heartbeat of the place, turning a quiet pint into a proper knees-up. Sitting by the fire that night, mug of tea in hand, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Amid the laughter and local lore, I realised how rare it is to arrive somewhere and feel instantly at home, not through fancy fittings, but through faces like Geoff’s, Mrs. Patel’s, Tam’s and Sheila’s. They turned first impressions into memories, quirks and all. Northumberland’s magic isn’t just the scenery – it’s the characters who make you want to stay forever. Can’t wait to go back. |
