I’ll never forget the drive up to Northumberland for our three-day family getaway – it started with me confidently declaring I knew a shortcut from the A1, only to end up stuck behind a flock of sheep on some winding B-road near Morpeth. The kids in the back were chanting “baa-baa-black-sheep-are-you-lost?” while I pretended it was all part of the adventure. Classic dad move, innit? By the time we rolled into the site, the sun was dipping low over the rolling fields, and there it was: our Autograph Junior Lodge, a cosy 3-bed caravan with its very own hot tub bubbling away like it was waiting just for us.

Pulling up, the first thing that hit me was how perfectly it slotted into this slice of Northumberland paradise. Tucked away in a peaceful holiday park just outside Morpeth, it felt worlds away from the daily grind, yet close enough to nip out for a pint if the mood took us. The lodge itself is one of those clever static caravans that punches above its weight – modern, sleek, and surprisingly roomy for five of us. We tumbled out of the car, bags flying everywhere, and the kids made a beeline for the decking area. “Hot tub! Hot tub!” they yelled, as if it was the Holy Grail. I could already picture the chaos: soggy towels and endless splashes.

Stepping inside, the first impressions were spot on for a relaxed family break. The open-plan living space is all warm wood tones and plush seating, with a kitchen that’s kitted out better than ours at home – full-size fridge, oven, microwave, the lot. No faffing about with tiny camping gear here. We dumped our stuff in the three bedrooms: two doubles and a twin, all with proper beds that didn’t creak like our old guest room divan. The en-suite shower room was a godsend after that sheep-delayed drive – steaming hot water and plenty of space, no queuing like in a tent.

But let’s be honest, the star of the show is that private hot tub on the deck. Sat there under the evening sky, jets pounding away, it was pure bliss. We cracked open a bottle of fizz (non-alcoholic for the little ones, obviously), and just soaked it all in. The air smelled of pine and fresh grass, with distant bleats from those cheeky sheep reminding us we were proper countryside now. The kids turned it into a bubble bath Olympics, competing for the biggest foam beard – light-hearted mayhem that had us all in stitches. Me? I was king of the tub, feet up, pretending I wasn’t secretly thrilled to escape the school run routine.

Wandering the site that first evening sealed the deal. It’s got that laid-back vibe: a play area where the kids burned off steam on swings and slides, a games room with pool tables for a quick family showdown (I let them win, naturally), and laundry facilities if you’re prone to packing light like me. No need to venture far – everything’s on your doorstep, keeping that chilled lodge life intact. We grilled some bangers on the provided BBQ, the smoke wafting lazily as the sun set in a blaze of orange over the fields. Simple pleasures, eh? Sausages, laughter, and no Wi-Fi nagging at us.

As I sat there later, nursing a cuppa and watching the kids conk out after their hot tub frenzy, I had one of those gentle moments of reflection. Life’s mad rush had taken a backseat; here in our little Northumberland nook, it was all about these unhurried joys – the warmth of the lodge, the giggles, even the silly drive-up drama. In a world that’s always go-go-go, this was the reset we didn’t know we needed. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Can’t wait to go back.
