About Northumberland
Pulling up to the lodge around teatime, I was knackered but buzzing. Tucked in a peaceful wooded spot just outside Morpeth, it’s the sort of place that screams “unplug and stuff your face.” The owners had left a welcome pack—fresh scones, clotted cream, and a jar of local strawberry jam that had me weak at the knees. Our spaniel, Monty, went mental sniffing it out, tail wagging like a windscreen wiper on full. First impressions? Spot on. The lodge is compact but lush—open-plan kitchen-diner with all the gadgets, two snug bedrooms, and that hot tub peeking out back like a promise of bliss. We dumped the bags and cracked on with supper, no faffing about. I’d planned a proper Northumberland nosh-up from the off. Morpeth’s just a short hop away, so we nipped to the weekly market on the high street—think stalls groaning under Craster kippers, sticky toffee pudding, and hunks of Stilton from nearby cheesemongers. Bargain-hunted some smoked mackerel and a loaf of crusty bread that still smelled of the oven. Back at the lodge, I fancied myself a chef, firing up the hob for a pan haggis fry-up. Haggis from the market, mind—proper peaty stuff with neeps and tatties. Dave manned the grill for local sausages, but I overdid the tatties into a gluey mess. “Culinary disaster,” I admitted, scraping the pan. We salvaged it with a splash of ale from the fridge (they’d stocked a few Northumberland Blondes—crisp and golden, perfect for masking my sins). Sat at the wooden table, plates piled high, Monty hoovering crumbs, it felt like home but better. That first meal was pure comfort—salty kippers flaking onto buttered bread, washed down with a cheeky pint. Laughter echoed as we slagged off my cooking; light-hearted ribbing over full bellies. Evening rolled in, and we couldn’t resist the local pubs. A ten-minute drive to the White Swan in Morpeth—quaint as owt, with beams low enough to clock your pint on. First impressions there? A roaring fire, locals nursing halves of Timothy Taylor’s, and a blackboard screaming “Northumberland hotpot special.” We demolished two bowls each, the lamb meltingly tender under a crispy potato lid, chased with crusty rolls and a side of pickled red cabbage. Puds were sticky toffee with custard so thick it glued my spoon. Monty sprawled under the table, dreaming of scraps. Chatting with the barman about the best takeaways (he swore by the chippy on Newgate Street for battered haddock), we stumbled back to the lodge rosy-cheeked and stuffed. As I sank into the hot tub that night, bubbles churning under starry skies, steam rising with the scent of pine, I had a quiet moment. Trips like this make you reflect—rushing through life, always chasing the next thing, when really, it’s these simple joys that hit home: a botched meal turned triumph, a pub yarn with mates, the warmth of a lodge that feels yours for the weekend. First day in, and Northumberland had me hooked, belly full and heart lighter. Couldn’t wait for more. |
