About Acorn Lodge.
Felton is a charming village in rural Northumberland, between Morpeth and Alnwick. It has a shop with post office, coffee shop, pub and restaurant. Just 10 miles from Alnwick Castle and Gardens – Europe's largest cascading water feature, huge treehouse, rose garden and walled garden. Famous as Hogwarts in Harry Potter films! Alnwick offers shops, pubs, eateries, sandy beaches, castles and Farne Islands boat trips. Perfect for exploring Northumberland's Heritage Coast. Nearby attractions.
About Northumberland
First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The place is a proper gem – a snug two-bedroom cottage with a wood-burner that screamed "cosy nights ahead," and a kitchen that looked like it was begging for some culinary adventures. I dumped my bags, cracked open a window to let in that fresh Northumberland air, and headed straight for the local shops. Morpeth's just a short hop away, and their weekly market was on – stalls groaning under piles of local cheeses, plump sausages from nearby farms, and the freshest veg you'd ever see. I loaded up on Northumberland cheese (that crumbly, tangy stuff that's basically addictive), a couple of pork pies, and some tatties that still had mud on them. Proper job. Back at the lodge, I fancied myself a MasterChef for the first evening. The kitchen's kitted out nicely – oven, hob, all the gear – so I set about roasting those tatties with some rosemary from a nearby bush (hope that's allowed) and grilling local bacon I'd nicked from the market butcher. Smells wafted through the place like a hug from your nan. But here's where the humour kicked in: I overdid the tatties into bullet-hard rocks. Tried to salvage them with a bit of gravy from a packet, but ended up laughing at my own efforts while picking at the bacon. Paired it with a cracking local ale from a bottle I'd grabbed en route – think it was a Hadrian and Border brew, malty and perfect for washing down my rookie mistakes. Next morning, first full day, I wandered over to the Plough Inn, a proper old-school pub not five minutes' stroll from the lodge. It's got that low-beaming-ceiling vibe, with locals nursing pints and chatting about the footy. I went for the full Northumberland breakfast – black pudding that melts in your mouth, Luddite bacon (thick-cut, smoky heaven), and eggs from free-range hens down the road. Washed down with builder's tea strong enough to stand a spoon in. Sat by the window, watching the world go by, and thought, "This is living." The landlady even slipped me a tip on the best chippy nearby – turns out it's just up the lane, doing battered haddock that could win awards. Lunch was a cheeky pasty from the market bakery, stuffed with local beef and onions, eaten on a bench overlooking the lodge's garden. Afternoon? Back in the kitchen for round two. This time, I played it safe with a cheese platter – sliced that market cheese thin, added some chutney and crusty bread from the village shop. Cracked open a bottle of Northumberland cider, crisp and appley, and lounged by the patio doors. The light streaming in made everything feel golden, and I had a proper moment of reflection there: amid all the scoffing, I realised how rare it is to slow down, no rush, just good food and quiet. No Instagram faff, just me and my munchies. Evening called for the Sun Inn, another gem within easy walking distance. Settled into a corner with their pie of the day – steak and ale, flaky pastry, gravy that could've been bottled. Sides of mushy peas and chips, all sourced locally. Chatted with a couple of regulars about the best spots for crab (saving that for tomorrow, maybe), and supped a pint of real ale that hit the spot. Staggered back to Acorn Lodge stuffed to the gills, the wood-burner flickering as I nibbled on leftover cheese. That first 24 hours set the tone – Acorn Lodge isn't just a base; it's a foodie's haven, with Morpeth's markets and pubs on your doorstep turning every meal into an event. Can't wait for day two's feasts. |
