About Northumberland
Pulling up to the lodge just as dusk settled, I have to say, the chaos melted away faster than a Cornetto in July. Tucked in a peaceful spot on the edge of Swarland village, this wee gem is the sort of place that screams “proper getaway”. It’s a cosy wooden lodge, all rustic charm with a pitched roof and those big windows that promise views worth waking up for. We parked on the gravel drive – crunching under the tyres like a satisfying ASMR video – and there it was, nestled among lush gardens that backed onto open countryside. No thumping traffic, no nosy neighbours, just the faint bleat of sheep and the rustle of leaves in the breeze. Northumberland does quiet like nowhere else, doesn’t it? Fumbling the keys into the lock (lesson learned: check pockets twice), we tumbled inside, and blimey, first impressions? Spot on. The open-plan living area hit us like a warm hug – think plush sofas begging for a collapse, a wood-burning stove already set with kindling (genius touch), and a telly perched just right for footie or a Netflix binge. The kitchen was a dream for lazy cooks like us: gleaming hob, a cracking fridge stocked with local milk and butter (welcome pack sorted), and even a Nespresso machine for that morning caffeine hit. Dave immediately claimed the brewing rights, declaring himself “barista supreme” while I unpacked the booze. Wandering through, the two bedrooms didn’t disappoint. Ours had a king-sized bed piled high with fluffy duvets, and those views out the window? Pure bliss – rolling hills fading into twilight, with the odd rabbit hopping about like it owned the place. The en-suite was compact but immaculate, power shower roaring to life with water hot enough to scald a lobster. The second room, snug with twin beds, was perfect for Dave’s snoring habits – far enough away to pretend we hadn’t heard a thing. Outside, the private patio was the real star: wooden table, chairs, and a BBQ setup screaming for sausages at dawn. We cracked open a couple of tins, feet up, watching bats flit about under the stars. No light pollution here – just that big, inky sky Northumberland’s famous for. That first evening, supping on fish and chips from the village chippy (a five-minute hop away, crispy batter perfection), we just sat there soaking it in. The mishap on the road? Forgotten already. It made the arrival all the sweeter, like earning a pint after a long shift. Made me reflect a bit, actually – life’s full of these daft hiccups, innit? But places like this lodge remind you to breathe, laugh it off, and proper appreciate the simple stuff. Swarland’s got that unpretentious vibe: a pint at the Percy Arms pub down the lane, a stroll to the local shop for papers and pasties, all without leaving the bubble. If you’re after a Northumberland bolthole that feels like home but better, this 2 Bed Lodge is it. We hadn’t even unpacked properly, and I was already plotting a return. What a way to kick off three days of nowt but good times. |
