About 10 Water's Edge.
Felton is a charming village in rural Northumberland, between Morpeth and Alnwick. It offers a shop with post office, coffee shop, pub and restaurant. Just 10 miles from Alnwick Castle and its famous gardens—Europe's largest cascading water feature, huge treehouse, rose garden and walled garden. The castle starred as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. Alnwick has great shops, pubs and eateries, plus nearby sandy beaches, castles and Farne Islands boat trips. Perfect for exploring Northumberland's Heritage Coast. Nearby attractions.
About Northumberland
By the time I pulled up to the cottage, the late afternoon sun was dipping low, painting the Waters Edge development in those warm amber hues that only autumn can muster. 10 Water’s Edge sits right on the banks of the River Wansbeck, a cosy two-bedroom stone-built haven that screams “proper Northumberland retreat.” I parked up, grabbed my weekend bag, and stepped inside, hit immediately by that welcoming rush of wood-burning stove warmth – vital, mind, with the season’s bite in the air. The open-plan living space was a dream: squishy sofas piled with tartan blankets, a telly above the fireplace, and a kitchen kitted out with all the bits you need for a fry-up or a hearty casserole. But oh, the views – floor-to-ceiling windows framing the river, where mallards bobbed about and the water sparkled like polished pewter under the fading light. First impressions? Pure magic, shaped entirely by the autumnal glow. I dumped my bags and cracked open the bifold doors to the private patio, breathing in that earthy scent of damp leaves and woodsmoke from nearby chimneys. The season had turned the riverbanks into a riot of rusts and golds – hawthorn berries glowing like tiny lanterns, and the willows along the edge shedding their leaves in a gentle confetti dance. It was chilly enough that I layered up in my woolly jumper, but that just made the mug of tea I brewed taste all the better, steam curling up as I watched the sun set behind the trees, turning the sky into a watercolour of pinks and purples. That evening, I pottered about, unpacking with the radio on – local Northumberland tunes, naturally. The cottage felt like it was made for this time of year: double glazing keeping the draughts at bay, and that stove ready to roar. I lit it up, chucking in a few logs from the basket, and settled in with a book, mesmerised by the flames flickering against the gathering dusk outside. A light drizzle started pattering on the patio, typical October mischief, turning the river into a shimmering ribbon. It was cosier than a hug from your nan, that first night – no rushing about, just me, the crackle of fire, and the seasonal symphony of rustling leaves and distant owl hoots. Wandering down to the river path the next morning was a highlight, mist hanging low over the water like a soft blanket, the air crisp and alive with the scent of wet earth. Autumn’s touch made every step a delight: crunchy leaves underfoot, fungi sprouting from the banks, and the odd squirrel darting up an oak. I spotted herons stalking the shallows, patient as you like, and felt a proper pang of reflection – how often do we city folk miss this quiet? Here, at 10 Water’s Edge, the season stripped it all back, reminding me that sometimes the best holidays are the ones where you do bugger all but soak it in. By Sunday, as I packed up, the weak sun filtering through scudding clouds, I was already plotting a return – maybe next autumn, when the colours peak even brighter. That insignificant car muddle on arrival? Forgotten in the glow of this perfect, seasonal bolthole. If you’re after first impressions that linger like woodsmoke on your jumper, this is the spot. |
