I finally made it to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in Belford after a right faff of a drive up from the south. It was meant to be a straightforward three-day jaunt to Northumberland, just me, my battered old hatchback, and a boot full of snacks for some proper downtime in the countryside. But no, typical me – I took a wrong turn somewhere near Alnwick, missed the Belford turn-off entirely, and ended up looping round those narrow, hedge-lined lanes like a lost sheep. By the time I pulled up to the lodge, it was gone 4pm, the sun dipping low over the rolling fields, and I'd spilled half my flask of tea all over the passenger seat. Classic. I sat there for a minute, chuckling to myself, thinking, "Well, that's one way to christen the holiday."

Stumbling out with my rucksack and a soggy towel (don't ask), I took my first proper gander at the place. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Belford village, it's one of those classic stone-built cottages that scream Northumberland charm – low slate roof, whitewashed walls, and a little front garden bursting with hardy coastal plants that somehow thrive in the brisk sea air. Stepping over the threshold, it was love at first sight. The open-plan living area is compact but brilliantly laid out for a solo traveller like me: a squishy sofa piled with cushions facing a telly on the wall, and that aforementioned log burner ready to roar. The kitchenette's a gem – all granite worktops, a neat little oven, and a retro kettle that whistled like it was auditioning for the kettle choir. I dumped my bags and made straight for the bedroom, up a couple of creaky steps. Single bed? Spot on for one, with a fluffy duvet that looked like it could swallow you whole, crisp white sheets, and a window framing views of the garden and distant fields. No en-suite nonsense here; the bathroom's downstairs, compact with a powerful shower that blasted away the drive's grime in seconds. I stood under it, grinning, as steam fogged the mirror.

First impressions? Blimey, it exceeded expectations. After the arrival chaos – tea disaster and all – it felt like a warm hug from an old mate. I pottered about, brewing a fresh cuppa (no spills this time), and cracked open the window to let in the crisp Northumberland breeze. You can hear the gentle hum of the countryside: birds cheeping, maybe a tractor chugging in the distance, and that underlying whisper of the North Sea not far off. Belford's proper close – a five-minute wander to the village shop for milk and a pasty, or the chippy for the full seaside experience without the sand in your socks. I nipped out quick-like, grabbed some fish and chips wrapped in newspaper, and brought them back to eat on the little patio table outside. The sun was setting in a blaze of orange over the fields, and I thought, "This is it, innit? The simple life."

Sitting there munching, chips going cold in the chill, I had a bit of a moment. Life back home's been a whirlwind – work deadlines, endless scrolling – and here I was, after my daft driving blunder, feeling properly grounded. That lodge isn't flashy; it's real, unpretentious Northumberland at its best. No distractions, just space to breathe and appreciate the quiet. By bedtime, log burner flickering, I was tucked up cosy, already plotting a gentle stroll to the nearby coast come morning. What a cracking start – mishaps and all. Can't wait for day two.
