About County Durham
Pulling up to Stang Hideaway around lunchtime, though, all that faded. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Richmond, this wooden lodge is the epitome of hideaway bliss – surrounded by rolling Dales countryside, with sheep ambling about like they own the place and not a whiff of traffic noise. It's one of those self-catering spots that's proper North Yorkshire: low-beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire, and a hot tub peeking out from the private deck like a cheeky invitation. We unloaded the car in minutes – well, after wrestling the suitcases over a slightly wonky step that had the youngest lad declaring it a "booby trap." First impressions? Pure magic. The open-plan living area is all warm neutrals and tartan cushions, with a kitchen stocked with everything you'd need for a fry-up or a lazy pasta night. No faffing about with duvets either; fresh linen on the beds, and those views from the master bedroom window – green hills stretching out forever – had me proper chuffed. We dumped the bags and cracked on with settling in, the kids bouncing off the walls with that holiday energy. First order of business: hot tub. It's right there on the deck, steaming away under a pergola, and after our muddy detour, sliding into that bubbling warmth felt like sinking into heaven. The lads splashed about like deranged otters, drenching Sarah who was valiantly trying to read her book nearby. Chaos? Absolutely – water everywhere, and me fishing out a floating crisp packet that'd escaped from lunch. But that's lodge life, innit? Simple pleasures like this beat any five-star spa. We grazed on cheese toasties made with local cheddar from Richmond market (grabbed some en route), windows flung open to let in the fresh moorland air. The place has that perfect family vibe: board games stacked in a cupboard, a telly for rainy afternoons, and Wi-Fi that's there if you want it but won't drag you back to emails. As the sun dipped low – proper golden hour over the Dales – we wrapped up in blankets on the deck, sipping tea and watching the lads chase each other round the garden. No grand plans, just breathing it all in. Sat there, I had a quiet moment of reflection: life's mad rush back home, the school runs and deadlines, it all feels miles away here. Makes you realise how daft we are sometimes, chasing bigger thrills when this – a cosy hideout, family giggles, and a bit of puddle-jumping pandemonium – is what recharges the batteries. First impressions of Stang Hideaway? It's nailed that relaxed family break vibe spot-on. Can't wait to see what the next days bring, but honestly, arriving was half the joy. |
