About County Durham
I finally made it to Otters Holt after a bit of a faff on the drive up from Darlington. I'd nipped off the A167 too early, thanks to my rubbish sense of direction, and ended up looping round some sleepy back lanes near Hurworth for what felt like ages. Picture me, sat-nav yelling at me like a disappointed nan, swearing under my breath while a herd of cows stared judgmentally over a drystone wall. Classic me – turning a 15-minute jaunt into a 45-minute comedy of errors. But as I pulled into the gravel drive of this cosy little lodge, all that melted away. There it was, nestled in its private garden, looking like it had been waiting just for me.

Stepping inside for the first time was pure magic. The place is one of those dog-friendly wooden lodges that screams "relaxation station" – think low beams, a crackling wood-burning stove (already set with kindling, bless the hosts), and a kitchen that's kitted out with everything but the faff of unpacking. I dumped my bags, kicked off my wellies, and flopped straight onto the squishy corner sofa with a cuppa. The windows frame this lush, enclosed garden that's basically a love letter to doing sod all. High hedges keep the world out, and there's a patio with chairs begging you to park your bum and watch the birds flit about. I spotted a woodpecker tapping away on the fence within minutes – nature's telly, innit?

First impressions? It's the antidote to proper life. No grand plans, no rushing about. My three days here were all about savouring the joy of bugger all. Day one, I barely left the garden. Brewed a pot of tea, cracked open a battered copy of a Philippa Gregory novel I'd been meaning to read for months, and let the afternoon drift by. The sun filtered through the leaves, warming my feet as I dozed off mid-chapter. Woke up to the scent of damp earth after a light shower – proper County Durham weather, refreshing without being miserable. Chuckled to myself thinking how I'd told mates I was "exploring the Dales," when really, my big adventure was rearranging the cushions for maximum nap potential.

A gentle wander down the lane the next morning felt like enough "exploration." Hurworth's got that quintessentially English village vibe – stone cottages, a smattering of locals walking dogs (mine was in seventh heaven sniffing every blade of grass), and the Tees not far off, murmuring away. Popped into the village shop for milk and a sausage roll, chatting with the chap behind the counter about the footie. Back at the lodge, I fired up the BBQ in the garden – nothing fancy, just bangers and a bit of salad – and ate al fresco as the evening cooled. The hot tub was tempting, but I saved that for later, bubbling away under the stars with a GandT, listening to owls hoot. No Instagram moments, just me, the quiet, and a profound sense of "why don't I do this more?"

By day three, I'd hit peak sloth. Lounging in the garden swing seat, book forgotten, I just watched clouds scud over the fields. That's when it hit me – a quiet little reflection amid the nothing. Back home, I'm always chasing the next thing: deadlines, errands, scrolling doom. Here at Otters Holt, doing very little felt like the point. It's not laziness; it's recharging, properly slowing down in a corner of County Durham that's all peace and patios. No regrets about that daft detour on arrival – it was the perfect opener to the best sort of holiday. If you're after a cosy bolt-hole to switch off, this is your spot. I drove away grinning, already plotting a return.
