About County Durham
By the time I finally rolled up to Cherry Lodge around lunchtime, the sun was peeking through the clouds, bathing everything in that golden, low autumn light that makes County Durham’s countryside look like it’s been painted by a proper artist. Cherry Lodge is one of those cosy detached cottages tucked away in Healeyfield, just a stone’s throw from Consett – the sort of place that screams “get away from it all” without you having to trek miles. I parked up on the gravel drive, crunching over fallen leaves that smelled like bonfire night prep, and there it was: a quaint stone-built gem with a pitched roof and those classic sash windows, nestled in a quiet spot surrounded by woodland that was putting on its autumn show. The air hit me first – that bracing, earthy chill laced with the faint dampness of decaying leaves, proper October stuff that nips at your cheeks and makes you crave a cuppa. Stepping inside for those first impressions, I was smitten. The living room welcomed me with a wood-burning stove already set with kindling (thank heavens, given the dropping temps), and big comfy sofas draped in woolly throws that screamed “hunker down as the nights draw in.” I dumped my bags and fired up the kettle, gazing out at the garden through the French doors – a riot of amber ferns and rusting brambles, with the trees beyond shedding leaves in a lazy whirlwind. It was like the season had curated the view just for me; no harsh summer glare, just this soft, mellow glow that invited lingering. I brewed a pot of tea, slathered some scones with clotted cream I’d picked up en route (post-pumpkin disaster, mind), and plonked myself by the window. The cottage’s compact layout felt just right for autumn cosiness – a snug kitchen with all the mod cons hidden behind Shaker-style cupboards, and upstairs, two bedrooms with fluffy duvets begging to be burrowed into when the frost creeps in later. Wandering the garden path later that afternoon, wrapped in a scarf against the whispering wind, I couldn’t help but chuckle at how the season amplified everything. The neighbouring fields near Healeyfield were dotted with sheep munching on the last of the grass before winter, their woolly backs misted with dew, and the woodland paths just a short stroll away rustled with squirrels hoarding nuts. It was peaceful, almost meditative – no crowds, just me and nature winding down. I even spotted a few late blackberries clinging to the bushes, tart and perfect for a makeshift crumble that evening. That insignificant pumpkin mishap on the drive felt like a hilarious overture now, setting the tone for a stay shaped entirely by autumn’s embrace: shorter days urging early fireside chats with myself, the earthy scents seeping through every crack, and that golden light fading into twilight by tea time. Sitting there as the sun dipped, mug in hand, I had one of those gentle moments of reflection. Life back home’s been a whirlwind of deadlines and bustle, but here at Cherry Lodge, with the leaves carpeting the ground like nature’s own rug, I felt properly reset. Autumn has this way of stripping things back, doesn’t it? No distractions, just the essentials: warmth inside, beauty out. Those first hours sealed it – if you’re after a County Durham escape where the season steals the show, this is your spot. I was already plotting a return before I’d even unpacked properly. |
