About County Durham
I finally made it to that cosy 1 Bed Lodge in Crook after what felt like the scenic route from hell. I'd set off from Newcastle early doors, buzzing about my three-day jaunt in County Durham, but oh no, the sat-nav decided to have a proper mare. It chucked me down some winding back lane near Billy Row, where the potholes were deep enough to swallow my little hatchback whole. I bottomed out once—crunch!—and spent ten minutes faffing about, convinced I'd knackered the undercarriage. Turns out it was just a muddy rut, but it had me swearing like a trooper and questioning my life choices. Why didn't I stick to the A689, eh? Classic me, always chasing the "scenic" option.

By the time I rocked up at the lodge in the late afternoon, I was knackered, covered in a fine layer of Durham dust, and my phone battery was on its last legs from constant rerouting. The place is tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Crook, surrounded by those rolling fields that make County Durham feel like proper countryside escape. No traffic hum, just birdsong and the odd sheep bleating in the distance. I parked up on the gravel patch—mindful not to repeat my pothole drama—and there it was: this adorable log cabin, all woodsy charm with a little veranda overlooking a garden that's basically a wildflower haven. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. After the drive-from-hell, stepping onto that wooden porch felt like arriving at Narnia.

I fumbled the key safe code (post-mishap brain fog, innit?), but once inside, it was pure bliss. The open-plan living space is compact but spot-on for one—snug sofa piled with cushions, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire later, and a telly mounted just right for bingeing while the kettle boils. The kitchenette's kitted out proper: toaster, microwave, even a proper hob for knocking up beans on toast. I dumped my bags and cracked open the complimentary tea stash—PG Tips, thank the lord—and brewed a mug while taking it all in. That massive window frames the view perfectly; you can see right across to the fells, with sunlight dappling through the trees. It's got that "get away from it all" vibe without being remote—Crook's just a quick hop away for a pint at the local or a wander round the high street.

Venturing out for first impressions proper, I strolled the garden path, which loops around the back. It's got a couple of benches for pondering life's potholes, and a fire pit that's screaming for marshmallows come evening. I spotted a family of rabbits nibbling nearby—proper Disney stuff—and laughed at myself for getting misty-eyed over it. The air's so fresh, laced with that earthy, post-rain scent that's pure Durham magic. No wonder folks rave about these spots; it's like the world's hit pause.

Popped into Crook for essentials—nipped to the Co-op for milk and a pasty from the bakery (flaky as owt, proper job)—and was back before the sun dipped. Sat on the veranda with my brew, feet up, watching the light fade over the fields. That arrival chaos? Forgotten already. It made the lodge shine even brighter, a wee sanctuary amid the minor mayhem. Made me reflect, sipping my tea as the shadows lengthened: life's full of those silly scrapes, but places like this remind you to breathe, laugh it off, and just soak it in. Can't wait for day two, but crikey, what a cracking start.
